LOL .....   I used to get a huge dump truck of all the unsold pumpkins at the local produce stand after Halloween and dump them just outside the chicken house.   They would freeze solid and the chickens would peck at and eat them all winter long.   Boy did it ever make the yolks orange.

You comment about potatoes reminds me of the book, "Potatoes Not Prozac!.   I think anything for the chickens to forage and keep them distracted will prevent them from pecking as long as it is not roosters going for a ride doing the damage.  The only thing that will stop that is the ax!

I always gave mine raw potatoes, it stopped the pecking and didn't hurt them.

I have had chickens for 20 years seen a lot. If they are picking feathers from one another just put some potatoes on the pen with them they will peck potatoes instead of each other.

I was told to put vaseline on the bare patches. Really thick. Apparently the other chickens don't like getting on their beaks, so the stop pecking/plucking at their friends.

It has been a great solution for us.

I would like to get suggestions for both treating hens who have been pecked -- missing feathers and to prevent this.  I don't know what is causing this,  I have three hens and one of them is brutalizing the other two.  They have plenty of space, food and water...

Looking forward to the Tour 'd Coup in May.
