Mt Warning sunrise climb

As it's too hot these days for a daytime hike, let's do a nocturnal climb of Mt Warning to watch sunrise from the summit. If U haven't done this before, it's a must. U will only realize when U do it once and U will fall in love with this night hike. This was the best hike I have ever done in Australia! Natures is just magnificent on the way back as the morning light is very soft so make sure to bring your good camera!

Mt Warning summit is the first place on mainland Australia to receive the sun's rays each day. Over 60,000 people a year make the 4.4km, 3-4-hour round-trip trek to the top.

Mt Warning is 14 kilometres west of Murwillumbah, NSW. Actually NSW time is 1 hour ahead of us but to avoid confusion we set all times according to QLD.

Sunrise will be 5AM so we have to be at the car park 2AM to start the hike.

This is a joint event with Happy Hikers meetup group. Please make sure you are fit enough as this is a nearly technical hike and near the summit you have to use chain to drag yourself up (as U can see in the photo!)

More info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Warning

If U use a GPS plz enter:

State: NSW

Suburb: Mt Warning or Murwillumbah or Uki (depending on GPS)

Street: Mt Warning Rd

Then U need to drive to the end of Mt Warning Rd which is Breakfast Creek Parking Area where we will meet.

Plz bring:
1st aid kit
Suitable sturdy shoes and pancho (usually it's cloudy, rainy, wet and slippery)

2 litres water, food, snacks, energy bars
Insect repellent
Mobile
Camera
Headlight

If U have any questions plz call or SMS me[masked]

C U soon!

As we might be nearly 100 people and the track might get crowded, we have to start punctually at 2AM and those who come later can join us on the track. I have bought enough glow bracelets so all meetup people can be recognized in the dark by their glow bracelets. The last person on the track will carry a bunch of bracelets, will give to people who join later. If I can't see U on the track, we will hopefully see each other on the summit or on the way back! THIS IS NOT AN EASY HIKE. PLZ READ ALL DETAILS AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS! THIS IS JUST A SOCIAL GROUP AND WE HAVE NO PUBLIC LIABILITY. IT'S YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SAFETY AND HEALTH.

Hi there, is there a limit on how many people can do this walk at once? 78 seems a bit optimistic so just wanted to check that we can all do it?

This hike was postponed 3 times and also announced in 2 other meetups. Nearly 200 people have RSVPed altogether! Some people have RSVPed in more than 1 meetup group, also my experience says roughly one third of people actually attend, specially due to its timing and distance. I predict we will have about 50-80 people which is hopefully manageable!

      December 28, 2013

    • Jenny G.

Hi Mahmood - way too many people for an enjoyable bushwalk for me, cant imagine 50-80 people trying to get up to the end point ;). But have fun anyway and hopefully see you all on another walk soon.

I'd be keen for a lift. I live in Runcorn but I could come over to your place if that makes things easier for you?

The last 10% involves using chains as U can see in photos. U don't need special climbing gear but just suitable shoes, clothes, 1st aid kit, some food and water. Plz read all details I mentioned above and also have a look at this link and its photos to have an idea:

I've had to change my RSVP to "no" for this walk. Sorry Peter and Jo but I won't be able to make it after all. I had overlooked another commitment made before Christmas on the same day. With so many people going, hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to get a ride with another in my stead. Again, my apologies for the false start.

No troubles Kristine, I just realised I had other things to work around too, so wouldnt have needed the lift in the end, hope you get to do the climb. Happy New Year!

    Dear all

Unfortunately Mt Warning track is still closed due to maintenance and NSW national park authorities can't give us an estimate date of reopening. We have to postpone this popular hike again and hopefully we will do it on Sunday 1 Sep. if it's open by then.

I apologize again if this has made any inconveniences for you.

    Cheers

I just called them again. The track and carpark is a mess and still closed. It may take 1-2 months for them to clear the track. I am going to postpone this event to Sunday 28 April. 3rd time lucky hopefully!
To prevent disappointment, I am going to put the BBQ event we cancelled last Monday, for this Sunday, so plz stay tuned!

I called NSW National Parks and they said the track is still officially closed. There has been land-slip and tree falls on Mt Warning Rd which is not cleared by the local council yet. They haven't inspected the track yet but as the summit track is on Eastern aspect of mountain where all strong winds happens, they predict the track might be damaged with tree falls etc.
I will call them again tomorrow afternoon and will update you but most probably we have to postpone this cursed event again! Maybe that's why it's called Mt Warning by Captain Cook!
As clearing the track may take a while and we have other events, we will probably postpone it (again!) to Sunday 28 April.

We will keep an eye on it and if still closed by Friday afternoon, we have 2 cancel this event again!

I'd really love to do this! Yet, I regret that I have to say no at this time, as I will be working whole day on Fri, and I don't know if I'd stay awake during 1-8am for both driving and hiking. Hope this event would be repeated for a few more times, preferably on Sunday morning. Cheers :)

What a wonderful sounding event. I will have to say no at the moment and go into training and hope it will be repeated in a few months time!!!! I am beginning to wonder if this being random requires a certain level of fitness.
