Cedar Ridge Preserve Hike

Join us for a hike at Cedar Ridge Preserve in Dallas.

This has become one of my favorite hiking spots in DFW and I thought it would be a good first hike of the year. At an elevation of 755 feet, Cedar Ridge Preserve (formerly the Dallas Nature Center) is a slice of the hill country just 20 minutes from downtown Dallas.

Cedar Ridge Preserve is a natural habitat of 600 acres featuring about 9 miles of trails, native trees, grasses and wildflowers, butterfly gardens, limited picnic areas and wild mammals, birds, insects and reptiles.

CRP has been managed by Audubon Dallas since April 2003 by charter from the Dallas County Park & Open Space Program and the City of Dallas.

What you should bring:

Comfortable shoes, "if you have hiking shoes" even better, that you don't mind getting dirty, water, snacks and appropriate clothing for the weather.

Please keep in mind that there is some slight altitute changes.  bare minimum of cardio is needed.

This meetup may be cancelled/rescheduled depending on the weather. I'll be keeping up with it leading to it.  Please check the meetup page the morning of for updates.

hi, I've never been to hiking before,I am wondering what kind of equipment may be required for hiking ? Please let me know so that I can pack my bag .Thanks!

    March 28, 2014

    • Abbas

Hey Gona. The one we going to is really a small hike . So proper shoes and water or Gatorade should be just fine. I have done this train on my lunch time several times. So its a decent one.

    • Gona

      Sure,thanks !!!

Is the trail okay to wear normal tennis shoes or do you recommend wearing boots?

    March 17, 2014

    • Thomas D.

I read that some of the parts are pretty steep. Boots will give you more ankle support but I am sure you could wear tennis shoes especially if they are more comfortable.

Hey all, just chiming in...i go often to this location and wear tennis shoes. I usually run or jog the trails. You want to be comfortable in the shoes you select. I will state you want a good grip because rocks can be a little slick. i purchased hiking tennis shoes specifically for hiking for $35 at academy. All in all its soooo beautiful you will enjoy it :-)

Cedar Ridge Preserve does not charge admission, but they have a donation box in front of the visitor center! If you've never been there you will be surprised by the beauty so close to home!

I'm going to change the location of this to Cedar Ridge Preserve in Dallas, since the Cedar Hill State Park charges admission.
