The Culture Wars

Location: TOZ location 2 in Gangnam. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS LAST TIME.

There are two TOZ branches in Gangnam, so make sure you go to the right one.

From Gangnam Station (Line 2): Take exit 10 and walk straight until you pass Frisbee (the Apple reseller). It's about a 10-minute walk. TOZ will be on your left above Hana Bank. If you reach Kyobo tower or the Line 9 subway station, you went a little too far.

From Shin-nonhyeon Station (Line 9): Take exit 6 and walk straight ahead, just bast Kyobo Tower. TOZ is on the right above Hana Bank (it's not far from the station).

Fees: 8,000won per person.

Details:

In this meeting we will look at the cultural phenomenon of the "Culture Wars", and discuss the different perspectives from which we approach and engage it. This is a topic on which people on "our" side of the issue find a great deal of divergence, and which could stimulate a rollicking good discussion of means and ways.

The meeting will go something like this:
1. A brief overview of the culture wars, from around the publication of Richard Harris's "End of Faith" in 2002 until now.
2. A quick survey on people's impressions of the movement/social changes occurring
3. Discussion questions about the role of Atheist/Freethinker groups going into the future, Strong/Accommodationist activist positions, and the possibility of uniting around a set of common goals.
4. Time to wander down whatever conversational rabbit holes may have manifested during the earlier conversation.
5. Beer- Hoorah!.

As luck would have it, there is still space. I'll change your RSVP later. We do sometimes fill up, so on general it's safer to RSVP in advance ;-) see you in a couple hours!

Hi Matthew! I am a new member here. I just registered.
Well, I didn't know that the RSVP is closed a couple of days before the meeting. Also, it feels too long for me to wait for the next meeting. Is it possible to join this meeting tomorrow? Thank you for organizing an amazing group.

Yes, please join us. I just set your RSVP to yes :-) Usually we do have space, but not always, so thanks for asking.

    Hi everyone,
This is ROKON from Bangladesh. I've been a member of this group for a year. I tried my best to attend meetup but failed due to the schedule typically on Saturday. I work on Saturday too so ain't able. If meetup hold on Sunday, I'll be a regular attendent.
Anyway, see you all tomorrow like minded people. Cheers!

Hi Rokon! We usually meet on Saturday because that was the most popular day for a long time (and some members can't attend on Sunday), but if theres enough interest, maybe we can alternate. Thanks for the feedback and see you tomorrow.

I'm putting together the presentation for this Sunday's meetup, and thought you all might like a little bit of background reading:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_war#2000s - Wikipedia, for obvious reasons.

www.culturewars.org.uk is replete with interesting essays and discussion on related topics.

http://www.culturewars.org.uk/index.php/site/article/to_bash_or_not_to_bash/ - This is one of them, though the writer's conclusions are a little hard to get behind, the subject is a pivotal one.

    http://www.pewforum.org/Politics-and-Elections/Is-There-A-Culture-War.aspx - "Is there a culture war"

    Hello,
I'm looking forward to joining the group/meeting you all this weekend. Is TOZ a restaurant or a bar or something (so I know what to look for)? And should I read/watch anything prior to coming? Thanks.

Hey Mya, I'm looking through materials and the like now. I'll send out a list of interesting links for people to look through toward the end of the week, but they will by no means be compulsory. See you Sunday!

Hi! TOZ is a meeting center. The sign is small, so look for Hana bank per the directions. I'll email all attendees my cell number the evening before, in case you get lost. As for what to watch... I think I'll leave that to Anthony to answer ^^

Hello Matthew, thank you for the invite. I'm not going to make it. I'm going to the Philippines next weekend. When is the next function?

    November 12, 2012

    • Matthew F.

We haven't scheduled the next one yet. December is always a bit tricky to organize due to everyone's holiday schedule (and I get really busy at work in December). As soon as we know, I'll post the date. Have a good time in the Philippines!

By the way, sorry for scheduling this on a Sunday instead of a Saturday as we normally do; this month has turned out to be incredibly busy, and it wasn't possible to host on a Saturday. Hopefully, we'll be back to our normal schedule after this.

I'm down with this. Your plug about "End of Faith" gives me an excuse to go read it. Count me in.
