I started this group to invite individuals who are Jewish (or interested in Judaism because they are married to or dating someone Jewish and/or considering Jewish conversion) to the classes I teach. I have lectured widely in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I now teach at Ner Tamid Synagogue, on the border of Poway and Rancho Bernardo, where I serve as the rabbi. While strongly rooted in the Jewish tradition, I have studied broadly in Buddhism, Christianity, and Philosophy, all of which influence my approach. A large majority of my classes are free, though donations are always appreciated and will go to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund at Ner Tamid Synagogue to assist those in need. You may attend one or all sessions, even those listed as a series. The exception to this is the Intro to Judaism class, which is a series requiring regular attendance, and has a recommended donation associated with it.
* It is respectfully requested that no outside food or drink be brought into Ner Tamid prior to, during, or after class sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about this request, please feel free to e-mail me. Lunch will be provided by Ner Tamid for the Lunch and Learn sessions.
I studied religion and philosophy at Princeton (BA), Harvard (Masters in Theology), and Stanford (ABD) Universities before coming to the Conservative rabbinate, where I am working toward ordination. I lecture in various venues from public lectures to university teaching in subjects including Jewish Mysticism, Comparative Religion, Judaism and Buddhism, Psychology and Religion, Traditional Jewish Text Study, Existentialism, and Religion and Science. Additionally, I provide in-depth, personal guidance and instruction to individuals working toward Jewish Conversion. While some of my teaching sessions incorporate texts that come from the worlds of science, the Humanities, and other faith traditions, the main focus of my sessions and life-work is Judaism-directed.
The prayers of the Siddur contain hidden jewels and depths just waiting to be discovered. What did the Sages have in mind when they chose this word, this phrase, this sentence? Together we will unlock a specific prayer during each meeting, studying its history, its content, and its purpose. Moreover, we will examine how each prayer fits into an overall spiritual journey. Then we will pray it together. Read more
