Introduction. This is the Raw Meetup News Digest, which are sent on an intermittent basis. The top section has all of the new information. The bottom section has repeat information, which is included for the newer members who didn't receive the prior News Digest.
Outreach summary. Our membership is about to top 1,000 members and we have over 500 past events. Meetup has emailed us to let us know that we are one of their biggest and most active meetups. We are looking to grow the group so please invite friends to join with us at http://www.meetup.com/RawBoston/ . Thank you to everyone who helps with outreach.
Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, especially Mara. Other key members are Betsy, Joe, Dorothy and others. We have many good people who help support our members.
Opportunity. This email offers a tremendous opportunity for our members to self educate on the various topics of diet and health. Like anything else, if you want something, you have to pursue it to get the most out of it. You are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to invest your time and energy into it to learn about this most important matter.
Volunteers needed. There are volunteers needed. Light occasional work only when your schedule allows.
Task 1: Send a short note to welcome new members to the meetup (anyone can do this now, actually);
Task 2: Post some of the outreach info from our files section at local Whole Foods Markets, food co-ops and other places. Find the tear strip flyer and 12Up promotion sheets here... http://www.meetup.com/RawBoston/files/
Please email [address removed] with "Volunteer" in the subject line for more detailed info. Thanks.

Organic Spy Whole Foods Hidden Camera GMO Sting & Prop 37 in California
Please note that this video comes across as fair, but it seems that the entire section of asking WFM associates questions about GMOs that is classic "gotcha" journalism. Anyone with management experience would appreciate the difficulty in educating tens of thousands of store employees adequately and uniformly before they are put on the store floor to start working. There are though some good points brought up in this video so I'm including it so you can decide for yourself.
French GMO Study
This study runs for two years. It demonstrates significant problems starting in the 4th month, which is presumably why Monsanto only does 3 month studies and why they prevent people in the US from using their patented life organisms for studies.

Thought-provoking, short video from Melanie Joy, PhD.
This dinner-setting short conversation is revealing. Learn about how we are socialized regarding diet.

A documentary on preventing and perhaps healing cancer
"Healing Cancer from the Inside Out" is from the excellent, documentary film maker Mike Anderson. In it, Mike exposes government, AMA and American Cancer Society roles in hindering a proper and fair evaluation of cancer.
Available for inexpensive purchase here.
Eating: a documentary on veganism
Mike Anderson's first movie, "Eating," is also fantastic. It's the best movie that I've seen regarding making the case for veganism. This is the movie that Steve Wynn gave out to his 10,000 employees...and Steve Wynn is not a man who is easily impressed.
Available for inexpensive purchase here.
Sugar, The Bitter Truth Free online movie
Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. Series: UCSF Mini Medical School for the Public. (Note: all animal products have no fiber and all fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds do have fiber.)
Thanks to member Paul Weaver for this information. Paul writes:
"Please review "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" video carefully. You will need 1 1/2 hours. It is worth your time unless you have already removed all added fructose from your family's and especially your children's (including infant's) diet.
"The number one cause of high fat deposition is a high fructose diet. If you think you know the subject already, your friends may want to know about the additional correlations with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and toxicity."
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) free online movies
This is a very important movie regarding genetically engineered food.
The work done by this group is vitally important to human health.
Here's another free ground-breaking movie about GMOs: The World According to Monsanto
This movie keeps disappearing from where it gets posted so please watch it soon. If the link doesn't work, if you search it, you might be able to find it somewhere else online.
A Note on the Animal Rights Material. Our members have a wide range of diets and we welcome everyone who is interested in learning more about the raw, plant-based diet. For those of you who are looking to move in the fully plant-based (vegan) direction, it is my belief that watching educational videos with animal rights information in them is an important step in getting to vegan and staying vegan. It is unfortunate that animals in agriculture are treated cruelly, but it happens to be true. Only a few of the videos listed in this email depict the brutal truth (Earthlings, Glass Walls and Meet Your Meat), so you may have to watch them in a few sittings. Having the fortitude to face reality in this case, in my opinion, does provide us with better information from which to make positive choices for ourselves and our families.
Earthlings movie is now free online
This movie explores how humans interact with animals and nature. It's time that we see clearly what "we" as humans are doing.
Glass Walls: Paul McCartney presents a compelling argument for a plant-based diet in this 13-minute video.
Meet Your Meat: Alex Baldwin narrates this real, read brutal, 11-minute documentary on the animal food industry.
We have a group message board
