Read Between the Wines

For May 2014 we will be reading "City of Thieves" by David Benioff.

From the critically acclaimed author of The 25th Hour, a captivating novel about war, courage, survival — and a remarkable friendship that ripples across a lifetime.

During the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown into the same cell as a handsome deserter named Kolya. Instead of being executed, Lev and Kolya are given a shot at saving their own lives by complying with an outrageous directive: secure a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. In a city cut off from all supplies and suffering unbelievable deprivation, Lev and Kolya embark on a hunt through the dire lawlessness of Leningrad and behind enemy lines to find the impossible.

By turns insightful and funny, thrilling and terrifying, City of Thieves is a gripping, cinematic World War II adventure and an intimate coming-of-age story with an utterly contemporary feel for how boys become men.

Hey Kate...I am putting something together for a newsletter on this book we read and was wondering what we gave it on that 5 point scale? I work at a library so I think what I got from the group was really interesting stuff and was going to do a book review on it.

I am so sorry that I am not going to be there. The project I am working in is going live this week and I got pulled into some last minute issues. I was really looking forward to it.

I apologize for changing my RSVP so late in the game. I loved this novel! Unfortunately, my car met with a nasty pothole and will still be out of commission Monday night.

Thanks! The pothole fiasco is proving very pricey, but at least my car should be done tomorrow.

Sorry had to cancel last minute. I was surprised that I had moved up and off waitlist when I looked last night and now disappointed that I now cannot make it.

Does it make sense to show up even when on the wait list in the event people don't show? I'm a noob :)

But I can't have more than 24 attend, so I can't tell people on the waiting list to go ahead and show up.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
