All Read One Author (Neil Gaiman) and Book Swap

  • September 15, 2013 · 3:00 PM

The group has chosen Neil Gaiman as the author for September. You can read anything by Neil and we'll discuss them in chronological order.  If anyone finds a Gaiman biography, we found from last time that it really helps to understand the author if we have that background, too.  If you're that person, let us all know so we're not all looking for biographies!!

In addition to Neil Gaiman and Book Swap, we had a suggestion to do a pot luck for this meeting.  More details on that coming soon!!!

To everyone who attended our meet up in September, I just ran across this article today. I may not always agree with him, but I do enjoy his point of view!

Neil Gaiman: Why our future depends on libraries, reading and daydreaming

    Have a great weekend!

Hello:) This is my first ever book club meet-up; is it appropriate to take notes or write quotes, etc about the book before I arrive? Also, what a fantastic author! Thanks for encouraging me to read one of his books.

I agree with Ashley. I was completely unaware of Gaiman before we planned this book club event, and now I'm a big fan of his. I'm doing everything I can to read a variety of his works. I plan to watch one of his Dr. Who episodes this weekend.

Our bookclub could win a Skype session with Neil Gaiman!! I've entered already, but you can, too!! Go to: http://www.skypewithneil.com/ and fill in the info. If you haven't read Ocean at the End of the Lane, just look at Wikipedia for a description and come up with some questions. It would be great fun for us to be able to speak to him in person after our Sept. 15th meetup!!

Note to all group members: If you haven't or don't care to read a book by Neil Gaiman for the Sept. meetup, no problem!! Please come for the book swap and some great conversation! Remember to contact me via email ([masked]) for address for the meetup in two weeks!

    Thanks,
    Betsy

At just under 5 minutes, this is a pretty cool YouTube video with Neil Gaiman's voice and words.

I am 61 and miss my parents still. I am a great believer in occasions and rituals and memory keeping. These punctuations give life meaning and honor folks who we feel deserve it.

taking my mom to OC for what would have been her 60th Anniversary. She and my dad used to go there for their anniversary with some good friends. Figured it would be a nice way to honor them all.

Picked up a couple graphic novels, a collection of Sandman stories and Neverwhere. Hoping to see Rorschach Theatre's production of Neverwhere this weekend...

John's not there today, but I can tell you they usually keep the trade paperback collections in stock. He'll be there tomorrow (although I know seeing him isn't really the point!) I've been reading The Sandman, too, and enjoying it very much. Just finished Season of Mists.

If you are so inclined, please bring an appetizer to share. Just finger foods would be great. I'll have soda, juice, iced tea and wine, along with cups and plates, etc. If it is nice out, we can sit on the deck, and if not, we'll be inside. Also, we all know we have books that we need to get rid of!! Bring along your books and we'll set them out on some tables. Bring what you don't want, take home what you do! Really looking forward to this meetup!! If it is anything like when we discussed Kurt Vonnegut, it should be an interesting and lively discussion!!!

Even though it is 3+ weeks away, how about a plan for our next meetup? For our newest members, we are doing something a little different for September. Instead of meeting at Panera, we're meeting at my house, discussing Neil Gaiman and having a book swap. If you are attending, email me at [masked] and be sure to tell me who you are (addresses don't always give clues to their owners!) and I'll send you my address. (See next post for more info....)

I think I just fell in love with him after watching this...

      August 20, 2013

    • Betsy

Same here. I liked him when I first read Neverwhere. Then started to not love him so much as I watched him online and on tv...then I saw this speech...and melted.I think he is best through his words and not so much in real life.

if you like books on CD, the Anansi Boys is read by James Earl Jones (I am pretty sure!) and it just wonderful to hear.

I decided once again to do a bk about the chosen author rather than by him it is Prince of Stories: the many worlds of Neil gaimin.

Since I just finished reading it, I'll be talking about his latest work, Ocean At The End Of The Lane. Just came out a few weeks ago.

I was cleaning my bedroom and ran across a review of that book that I'd been saving for a future purchase. It sounds really interesting!
