This is a women only* book group and social club in London.
Our group meets every few weeks to discuss feminist literature (both modern and historical). We also go to some of the many feminist events taking place in London - talks, festivals, film screenings.
We also organise drinks to allow like-minded, fun, and intelligent women to hang out together.
Our group philosophy is to be as welcoming and as friendly as possible. Our aim is to create an informal, relaxed space in which women of different backgrounds and cultures can get to know one another, exchange ideas, and simply have fun.
Thebook groupwas inspired by the textReadingWomen: How the Great Books of Feminism Changed my Life by the American journalist Stephanie Staal. Ten years after graduating, married and the mother of a small child, Staal returned to her alma mater to re-enrol in Feminism 101 to re-evaluate and put to the test the feminist classics that had captivated her as a young undergraduate.
We discussed Staal's book in our first meeting and, like her,we began our reading with Christine de Pizan's The Book of the City of Ladies followed by Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. We then went on to read fiction and non-fiction including Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own; Charlotte Perkin Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper, etc.
Other classics on our radar include: Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex; Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique; Kate Millett's Sexual Politics; Erica Jong's The Fear of Flying; Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth; Ariel Levy's Female Chauvinist Pigs, to name just a few. However, we shall also read non-canonical texts written by women from a diverse range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
While we have real debates over the books, the environment of this group is intended as fun, friendly and informal. All feminist approaches are welcomed.
