Croatian Dinner at Rudar aka United Miners Soccer Club

The Mediterranean meets Eastern Europe at Rudar's "konoba", a subterranean Croatian restaurant in Astoria, Queens.  Established in 1977 by and for soccer loving coal miners from Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, Rudar will surprise you with its hidden charm.

The proposed menu:

Fuzi sa zvacetom istarski: Homemade bow tie pasta with veal sauce

Pileci odrezak Istriana: Chicken sauteed with wine and garlic sauce

Lignje przene: Fried calamari

Kiseli kupus i kranjske kobasice: Krainer smoked sausage with sauerkraut

Blitva s krumpirom: Mashed potatoes with swiss chard

Palacinke: Crepes with jam, Nutella or lemon and sugar

The final bill for the meal, including tax and tip, will be divided equally among the diners. The estimated cost per diner is $20-30. You will be responsible for the cost of any drinks and additional desserts that you order. Cash only. Please bring small bills.

Seating is limited to one table.  Please only RSVP “Yes” if you will attend. If your plans change, please update your RSVP.

The windowless brick building looks like you'll find Jimmy Hoffa, not a restaurant, in the basement. Open the two sets of doors and you'll be greeted, if greeted is the right word, by the up and down stares of senior Croatian gents. Not welcoming on the outside, not welcoming on the inside, but, if you walk down the unmarked stairs and follow the long corridor, your efforts will be rewarded with delicious comfort food in a warm and homey tchotchke filled dining room. Start with fuzi, a traditional Istrian homemade pasta folded like cannolis and covered in a red sauce made with tomato, broth, onion, wine and cubes of veal. The entrees, a fusion of Mediterranean vibrancy and Eastern European restraint, satisfy without challenging. If available, blitva s krumpirom is a must try side dish from Dalmatia. Much like the spotted dog, the white of the mashed potatoes is speckled with the dark of the Swiss chard. Come for the experience and the food. Rudar's bark is worse than its bite.

What a unique eatery! No one would know it is a restaurant but for the knowledgable Sally. Thanks Sally for introducing it. I enjoyed all the dish selections, especially the home made pasta! And it was a very enjoyable evening, well worth the trek!

Having been brought up on Eastern European food, I had low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. For me, the food was very good although not a unique, foodie experience (I have been spoiled after the tongue crawl). I enjoyed all the selections, especially the salad! LOL It was a fun evening in a very nice, unique setting. Thanks to Sally for organizing.

I am so glad that you developed this meet up. Great Idea! Food wasn't as tasty as expected but the price was unbeatable for what it was!

Sorry for the late cancellation, but I had the flu shot today and I'm feeling a bit out of it. See you all at the next event and happy thanksgiving.
