Northeastern Chinese Dinner at Lao Dong Bei

Call it Northeastern Chinese, Dongbei or Manchurian so long as you also call it delicious.  

Join us in "outer" Flushing for an authentic taste of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang, collectively known as the Three Northeastern Provinces.  

The proposed menu:

Green Bean Sheet Jelly

Spicy Shredded Cucumber

Tiger Vegetable


Pork in Orange Sauce

Xinjiang Lamb Chops in Cumin

Fried Fish in Cumin

Shredded Potato with Green Pepper

Wood Ear Mushroom

Dry Bean Curd with Hot Pepper

Shredded Pork with String Bean

Deep Fried Fruit and Vegetable with Hot Syrup

The final bill for the meal, including tax and tip, will be divided equally among the diners. The estimated cost per diner is $22-27. You will be responsible for the cost of any drinks and individual dessert that you order. Cash only. Please bring small bills.

    Even with 9 people squeezed around a makeshift table for 6 and plates balanced on top of each other like the Golden Dragon Acrobats were in town, Lao Dong Bei is the Manchurian candidate for best Chinese restaurant in NYC. That's Manchurian, the historical name for Northeast China aka Dongbei, not Maruchan. That's the poor man's Top Ramen. We were welcomed with a small plate of spicy pickled cabbage, a reminder of Dongbei's proximity to Korea. Tiger vegetable, a cilantro and scallion salad, elevates garnish into something grrrrrrrreat. The lamb and fish could have only been improved with adhesive cumin seeds. The last dish to come out of the kitchen, pork in orange sauce, negated the need for dessert. Fried curls of thin sliced pork coated in sticky sweet sauce were orange hued, but tasted as if no citrus was harmed in the making of this dish. Thanks to Marcella for confirming the realness of Lao Dong Bei and even ordering in Mandarin. You're exactly what we're looking for!

    Btw, the walk from the Main St/Roosevelt subway stop is only 10-15 mins; bus is 5 mins. Get off at Beech and Kissena. I live close by.
