Paddle/Picnic...Des Moines to Maury

  • Des Moines Marina

22307 Dock Street, Des Moines, WA (map)

    47.400299 -122.327904

  • The ramp to the marina by the parking lot nearest to the fishine pier/bathrooms.
  • Let's Paddle to Maury Island.  We'll travel together and then divide up depending on what everyone wants to do...explore the island, sun bathe, walk the beach or paddle along the shore and search for sea life.

I'll bring plates and a table cloth for our shared feast.  Bring your own beverage and a "pot luck" item to share with the group.  (Let's be creative...a person can only eat so many chips.)

Please don't crash the party. Sign up & post a picture so we know who's coming.

    Approximate time table:

    1:30 -  meet & greet, unload boats

2:00 - be in the water on our way

3:00ish - arrive at Maury Island - have a picnic - bring your own beverage and food to share with the group

5:45 - gather together at designated spot

6:00 - paddle back to Des Moines Marina together

    7:00ish - arrive at the marina/head home

This will be approximately 2.5 nm "open water" paddle with potential tug boat, leisure boat, and large ship traffic.  The water could be choppy.  I will cancel if there is much wind.  You must wear a PFD.  A wet or dry suit is recommended.  You should know self-rescue and assisted rescue techniques.  Although we will travel together, you are responsible for your own safety at all times.  Be sure you and your kayak/gear are in good working order.

Please be committed to attending the entire event.  We will travel to/from the island together.

    What to bring:

    layered clothing

shoes suitable for a rocky beach

    paddle/pfd/bilge pump/rope/spray skirt

pot luck item (please note what you're bringing in the comment section)

Hi tide/slack is approximately 1:15.  (We won't have to worry about the kayaks floating off while we explore! : )  Max ebb is 1.3 knots approx. 4pm.  We'll get a teensy bit of help on the paddle back.  Lo tide/slack is approximately 7pm.'

This event is based on weather/wind conditions.  It'll be more fun on a mild or sunny day.  I will reschedule if rainy or windy.

Please be sure to update your RSVP if needed.

    Hi Wanda,
I think this paddle is a little too far for my sit on top. Let's do the Slew again sometime.
    Have a great weekend,

Do you have to have your own kayak?

There is no rental in Des Moines that I'm aware of. You can rent from some place else (REI?) and transport there. Since I have my own boat I don't know much about rental places...maybe someone else can offer more insight.

Hello again Wanda. I'm guessing you're going to Maury Marine Park since it's a public access beach? You can surf the wake of a container ships out there :-)
