In this series we will explore the teachings on the Perfection of Wisdom, especially the extraordinary and profound teachings on emptiness, the ultimate nature of reality. Buddha taught that our pain and suffering is rooted in our own mind, in particular in our misapprehension of how things exist. By grasping at things, especially our self, far too concretely, we perceive a world of limitation. We feel that real, lasting happiness is not possible, that we are stuck in our bad habits, and that whatever happiness is possible comes from external things. In this way we set ourselves up for a life of dissatisfaction. Buddha’s teachings on emptiness help us to let go of mistaken limitations and instead to experience a joyful and deeply satisfying world of limitless possibilities. Buddha’s teachings on emptiness are subtle, challenging, invigorating, and profoundly life-changing.
