Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act by visiting the Tamarac Wilderness with the NCTA and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
Interested hikers may meet at Rainbow Resort for an optional casual lunch at 11:30am (menu: wild rice soup, sandwich, and beverage available for purchase). Information will be available at this time from the North Country Trail Association (NCTA), U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), and Friends of Tamarac NWR. At 1pm, the NCTA and USFWS will provide a brief introduction to Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, its Wilderness area, the Wilderness Act, and the 109.5 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System. After this short time indoors, hikers will be shuttled to the hike’s start on CR-35.
Following completion of the hike, participants will be shuttled back to Rainbow Resort to warm up and enjoy hot chocolate. The challenging off-trail snowshoe hike will be about 2-miles in length and hikers will follow a pre-packed trail out to Little Rice Lake. Adult snowshoes are available to rent ($5) at Rainbow Resort while kids snowshoes are also available for use at the Refuge Visitors’ Center. Participants should dress for the weather (layers), wear sturdy and warm boots, and bring sunglasses or ski goggles for going through thick brush.
