Yant Flat

  • May 2, 2013 · 8:00 AM

This is a moderately difficult hike (Class 3) going from above Heath Wash, down a beautiful sandstone bowl, up a rocky/sandy cliff side, down an even steeper beautiful sandstone bowl and continuing along in this fashion to an area overlooking Cottonwood Wash, for a total of 5.5 miles by the time we return to the cars. The sandstone in this area has been compared by some to The Wave. It is a fun place to hike but because of the fragile eco-system, the hike will be limited to 12 people. Due to the amount of scrambling, please, no dogs. Children above the age of 16 are welcome if they have good scrambling skills. We will leave Hart's by 8:00 a.m. If you go on this hike, bring plenty of water, food and electrolytes, as the temps will be climbing as steadily as our elevation (about 1300 feet gain/loss). While most cars can handle the dirt road to this area just fine, the higher the clearance the better. Good weather a must for this hike to go.

Thanks Tom, for finally getting me to the color bowl area of Yant Flat. For that, to me you are the King of the Hill, A number 1, Top of the heap, creme de la creme, cream of the crop, icing on the cake, peanuts in Cracker Jacks...!

How long is this expected to take? When should u return to cars by?

    May 1, 2013

    • Tom M.

It generally takes about 3 hours to hike this. Could be a little longer or shorter. Figure around 1 pm back to the cars and another hour to drive back to St. George.
