Okefenokee Swamp and Night Sky Photography Workshop

The Okefenokee Swamp is a magical place full of mystery and intrigue everywhere you look. It is one of my absolute favorite places in Georgia.

This is going to be an awesome workshop. Its one of my favorite workshops that I teach. We will be shooting everything from the sunrise, to the sunset and in between we will shoot the swamp itself and the wildlife from alligators to owls, from an assortment of other birds to dragonflies and of course, the ever present deer.

In the workshop presentation we will go everything you need to know in order to capture amazing imagery that will leave your viewers awe inspired. For those of you who want to take your photography to the next level, we will go over different avenues and ways that you can do just that.

And if all of that is not enough, after the sun sets, we will begin a whole new part of the workshop as we begin to capture the night sky in all of its glory.

The area where we will be shooting is one of Georgia's darkest sky areas. Many people in America today will never see all the stars or the Milky Way like you can see in this awesome location. I will teach each person how to capture it just as you see it and even better. And the best part, absolutely NO special equipment is needed.

(All of these images were taken at this location)

Our Agenda:

We will begin the workshop with a classroom presentation going over everything you need to know in order to capture all of these amazing scenes. Then we will spend the rest of the weekend in hands on and one on one practice of all these techniques, tricks and controls.

What you will need:

A camera that allows for manual controls

A Tripod

Your camera manual or a guide for it if you do not know how to use the manual controls on your camera.

Recommended but not Required:

A circular Polarizing Filter

Accommodations:

Cottages, Cabins and Camping will be available for rent nearby. Hotels are also available within a short driving distance. The participants usually work together to get a couple of cottages and share accommodations for the weekend. If you are interested in sharing a cottage with others please list it in the comment section below.

The rates at Stephen Foster are as follows:

$125-$135 per night for cabins

$65-$125 per night for rooms at the Eco-Lodge

Campsites available for $25-$30 per night.

The reservation information is available here: http://gastateparks.org/StephenCFoster.

Bonus:

The first five people to sign up will also get a free sunset boat tour included in the package.

Limits:

I always limit these kinds of workshops to no more than 10 - 12 participants. This workshop is one of my most popular workshops and tends to fill up quickly. So be sure to RSVP as soon as possible.

Update: This workshop is currently full.  We have 10 participants plus the two hosts signed up here and two more participants who are signed up outside of the meetup.  For all of those still wanting to take this workshop but that didn't make the registration, we have planned another one of these same workshops for August 9-10 during the Perseid Meteor Shower :) I look forward to seeing you all soon. :) Click the following link to go directly to the sign up page for August before it is sold out as well.

I had problems uploading pics to meetup before because of file size. Do you have suggestions on how to shrink them to upload? Can you do them as a batch?

I enjoyed the workshop thoroughly; although, it will take me some time to digest what I've learned! Thanks so much to everyone that helped me this weekend. I think I learned a little bit from each person. Thanks Rena for staying to help me take the last bird picture and Maria for being patient while we did that. I got home very late last night, because I did go back and kayak some. I kayaked out to "scary face tree" and took some more pictures :) on automatic :( (But the camera was in the waterproof bag, so I couldn't flip the door open.) I'll post a few pics later--going through them will take a bit of time!

    February 21, 2014

  • Rena J.

Any final questions? Tomorrow morning is going to be insane here as I have to go judge the photography contest and then as soon as I am done, we are heading for the swamp so there will be no time to answer questions then. I will do my best to check messages on the road and from the swamp but as we have been talking about, service may be spotty. So if you have any questions, ask today :) Everyone be careful on the way down and I look forward to see you all there :)

Cottage # 1 inside the park ... we will be there for dinner and socialization. At some point in the evening if the sky is clear we will go out shooting some. If you are going to get to the park AFTER the gate closes, you might want to call ahead of time and get the gate code. If you tell the park you are with the workshop and coming in after gate closing, they will give it to you whether you are staying in the park overnight or not. If you come in after the gate has closed and we are not at the cottage, we will be down at the end of the Marina shooting the night sky, well until bedtime of course! :)

Rena asked me to go through the comments and decipher who is bringing what for meals. Thursday night I think just Mary Ann, Jennifer and me and Rena will be there. Rena and I will bring pizzas for everyone. If anyone else will be there Thursday night please let me know. Breakfasts are being handled by each individual cottage or whatever. So y'all need to make your own arrangements there. We're all bringing our own lunches that we can eat while we're out and about. Rena and i are bringing chicken salad and crackers and grapes and putting it all in a small cooler which we'll bring with us each day to the workshop. That's just an example of what we're doing. This is what I see as far as Friday and Saturday dinners. Friday night Joan is making hamburgers and hot dogs along with baked beans. Mary Ann is bringing potato salad and coleslaw. Joan is also providing buns and condiments....

      February 19, 2014

I've not offered to fix anything, but I've been following the conversations to see what everybody's been suggesting. Since I've got to stock the RV for the next couple of weeks for Ed and I, that's been on my mind. Also, we don't have a lot of storage space in the RV refrigerator. However, I haven't noticed anybody saying anything about paper plates, table wear, cups, etc. How about I bring these items and then when we get there, I'll be glad to go and pick up any extra items if needed?

Packing List: I have some suggestions for items to bring with you for this workshop. First and foremost, even though I hope we are still way to early to be faced with this dilemma, I recommend BUG SPRAY! LOL Also please bring a small RED LIGHT with you for use in the night sky shooting. We will go over astrophotography ettiquette during the presentations, but in the meantime, please bring a red light with you if you have one. I recommend dressing in layers as well. It looks like it is going to be a little cool in the mornings and quite warm (mid to upper 70s) in the afternoons. The forecast keeps changing drastically from day to day for next weekend as I look at the extended forecast, so just be prepared either way. Also bring some comfortable shoes. You never know when you might have to run from a gator or not as the case may be! LOL Just kidding, sort of. :) Camera dust sleeves, snacks, drinks, bag to carry equipment on Billy's Island Tour and on boat.

    2 · February 13, 2014

    • Rena J.

Awesome. Glad you got those sorted out :) I would recommend having the 2nd card available. You never know when something might go wrong with one of them. Do you shoot in RAW? If so, those use up a lot more of your card space as well. My camera has double slots on it so I usually put a 16 GB in one slot and send my JPEGs to it and a 32 BG in the other slot and send all of my RAW files to it. That way I have backup at all times. I also bring an extra of each with me just in case. That usually takes care of most of my shoots.

      February 18, 2014

    • Tonya B.

Thanks for the info. I don't know anything about RAW. I ordered a second card for back up just in case.

I also emailed some of you my phone number that I didn't know for sure already had it just in case of emergency or problems of any kind and so you can let us know when you get there so we can all get together and hang out. See you all in the swamp ! :)

I found out prices for the kayak and canoe rentals for anyone wanting to come in a day early and go out in the swamp as a group on Friday. $12.00 for 2 hours
$18.00 for 4 hours $30.00 all day. We will plan to meet down there about 9:30 and be ready to head out about 10am. IF you are bringing your camera along, please be extra careful and consider getting a drybag specifically made for your camera or at least a dry bag to keep it in when not using it. Cameras are very easy to ruin if you get them wet at all and that would not be the way to start this workshop not to mention you would then be out a camera! So think just enjoy the scenery or get a dry bag :)

I was just thinking about the first time Maria and I went kayaking in the swamp. It was during alligator nesting season and there were a lot of lilies in bloom. There were gators everywhere and the pathway back to the little place I want to take you guys next month, was completely covered in lily pads with just barely enough room to get the kayaks through. We actually stopped in the middle of a lake that can only be reached this way and had lunch "parked" right in the middle securely within the lily pads. It was a magical time. Always is in the Okefenokee!

There are 10 participants plus myself and as many assistants as I decide I need. But I usually have around 10 - 12 paying participants for each workshop and never any more than that. If you look at it it, the workshop now shows as sold out. If that is too large of a group for you, I will be happy to refund your money since it is still so early in the game and you can sign up for a later workshop if you wish. However, this particular workshop is one of my most popular workshops and usually does fill to maximum pretty quickly ... which again is usually 10 - 12 participants. I hope this answers your questions.

Can someone that has a cabin and wants to share confirm they'd have a space for me? That would definitely be my preference. Otherwise, I can check on rooms. I'd like to confirm lodging before I sign up and pay.

Hi Tonya :) I am pretty sure that R J still has room in his cabin. :) I look forward to seeing you there. I am excited about this trip. :)

Thanks! I just need to run it by my boss in the morning, and then I'll confirm. I'm excited too!

This would be amazing! I love Okefenokee and love kayaking (and I'm learning photography). I'm trying to figure out if could make this work. This is my busy time of year. I'd have to work Friday for a least half a day and then drive down. Was there still room available in the cabin?

    1 · December 5, 2013

    • Rena J.

There is still room in one, possibly both of the cabins. I think there is room available also at the Eco-lodge. The workshop does not start officially until Saturday morning, so you would be fine if you wanted to do that. :) It is one of my absolute favorite workshops all year.

I have reserved the last cottage at STEPHEN C. FOSTER STATE for 6 people. There are 2 cabins remaining at the Eco-Lodge that is located 18-miles from the park.
Is there anyone interested in kayak early Friday?

    1 · December 3, 2013

    • Rena J.

Yes Sherry, I believe he is coming on Friday because some of us including him are planning to go kayaking during the day on Friday :)

Actually, I'm going to stay at the Econolodge. Thanks.

Billy's Island sounds great, I have read about the island
and the potential for photo's will be a delight>

    Looking forward to this trip

It will be really nice ! :) I cannot wait to share it with all of you :)

Bonus Adventure: Now included in this package for each paid participant is a tour of Billy's Island! :) Here is the description of the tour from the parks website: "Join us for a tour of historic Billy's Island. This island was home to Native Americans, pioneers, and lumbermen for thousands of years. We will take a boat out to the island and hike the short trail, about 3/4 of a mile, and view some of the relics left from times past." Costs for guests of participants will be $15-20. However, there is limited space for this particular trip out there and will most likely only be room for paying participants. However, the park will most likely have another tour going out at a different time that guests can take part in if they wish. This will be a great opportunity for more adventure and allowing for even more photo ops along the way :)

ME too Donna ... this workshop with bare bones with no tours or anything would be amazing. But getting to do the Billy's Island tour and The Sunset Boat Tour ... on top of all of the other stuff... it will be paradise! :)

Hey, everybody. Looking forward to attending this workshop in February. My husband is coming and we'll be staying in the park's campground. Know we'll learn a lot from Rena and, also, see some amazing and beautiful sights.
