The Houston Symphony runs a photo competition during their summer performances at the Miller Outdoor Theater. Admission is free.
The July 4th concert promises to be spectacular with music of the 1812 Overture, accompanied by real cannon, as well as fireworks at the finale.
The categories for submission in the competition are:
Family / Friends
Photographic rules were made to be broken, but the Symphony imposes a few rules for this event.
No flash photography during the performances. Actually, you will hear announcements that no photography is allowed, but the later clarification will specify flash photography.
This is a symphony performance, and the ushers for the covered area will not permit entry into the covered seating area during an actual performance, and may challenge people taking photographs. I've had to speak with the ushers prior to the performance to ensure they know why I'm there and to confirm that photographing the musicians is acceptable during this event.
If you speak with them, please reference the "Oh SNAP" photo competition. I've only once been denied the permission to shoot from a given spot, and honored their prohibition until I could speak with someone to clarify the situation. This is to say that the ushers are not all aware of the Oh SNAP competition and may need to get confirmation.
We will not be allowed to approach the stage to take any photographs during performances, and we will not be granted any special access to the event. Shooting from the seats is usually ok so long as it doesn't interfere with the performance or those seated around you.
The ushers are not worried about photography from the hill, except for the flash thingie.
The place is going to be packed, so get there early so you can find a good seat on the hill - close to the front! The performance starts at 8:30, but the good spots start filling up around 7:00 or earlier.
Whether you want to enter your photos, or just use this as an opportunity to photograph, it's an enjoyable evening!
If you want to see what others have submitted, last year's winners are on the web link below, and all submissions are on their Flickr site. Look for the "Houston Symphony" group.
For those who have not attended a Miller Outdoor performance, you are welcomed to bring snacks, wine, beer... Set up your lawn chair and kick back.
