Updated Meetup for Reno Freethinkers!
What: Reno Freethinkers Monthly Meetup
When: Wednesday, April 28,[masked]:00 PM
Round Table Pizza
801 W 4th Street
Reno, NV 89503
Hi there Freethinkers!
Our next monthly meetup is again at Round Table Pizza (Map: 801 W. 4th St, Reno, NV, 89503
) on April 28 at 6:00pm.
We'll be giving away another door prize at this Meetup! This month, it's a copy of Susan Jacoby's "Freethinkers, A History of American Secularism", which you can take a look at on Amazon: http://amzn.to/96mjyS
After everyone's settled into the back room, we'll be getting things started with a brief welcome followed by Justyne updating us on some of the volunteer opportunities she's found and begun to organize for interested members of the group. As part of those volunteering opportunities, Justyne has invited Tori from STEP2 Reno (http://step2reno.org/
) to come talk to us about their organization and how we can help.
Unfortunately, the May 6th blood drive has fallen through due to some scheduling issues, but if you're inclined to promote the National Day of Reason, please take a look at the official site (http://nationaldayofreason.org/index.php
) for support ideas we can all contribute to as individuals.
We'll be showing another short video from TED this month, which will feature Michael Specter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Specter
) speaking on the topic of "The Danger of Science Denial". I'll refrain from posting the link here so it doesn't become something everyone's already seen, but you can look up the video ahead of time if you'd like.
After the video, we'll set an amount of time for discussion and officially adjourn afterward. As always, members are perfectly welcome to stay and continue their discourse, but we wanted to start giving the Meetups a little more structure.
In keeping with that structure, I'd like to preemptively note that we'll be implementing a sort of informal hand-raising system so that everyone can get a chance to share their thoughts without having to speak over one another (I'm guilty too!). We're not prescribing anything rigid; the intent is to encourage those of us with louder voices and opinions to keep the volume reasonable and give every member an opportunity to contribute their thoughts.
As a side note, we're still looking for some other venues. If you can think of anywhere in the Reno / Sparks area with a side-room that's free to book, please let me know or post a response to the thread on the message board.
If you have questions or concerns, I'm always reachable at [address removed].
Thanks, and I hope you can make it!
- Ben M.
