Henry Coe State Park backpacking trip

I am proposing a 4 day 3 night trip down to Henry Coe / Morgan Hill for a weekend of flowers and spring.  This trip is not for the out of shape. Coe is a very rugged place and we will be doing a 27 mile weekend. Please see the park links for more info.

While our winter locally has been mild, I am itching to get out and Coe has been a favorite due to the abundance of flowers. That being said, California has had a dry year as well, and the rangers have indicated only 5 inches have fallen this past quarter. Flowers and water sources may be iffy. Still, if we don't go, we wont know, right?

If you can pack light and have the stamina for this trip, please join me! My plan is to drive down Thursday morning and hike into our first night location. We will move campsites Friday. We will day hike a loop Saturday, possibly returning to the Thursday night location (or not). And Sunday we will beat it back to the car for a long tired ride home.

I have room for 3 others in my car, and if there are more folks it would be advisable to caravan / consolidate rides as parking at Coe is limited.

I finally learned how to resize my photos on my new computer so I put some more on. I didn't want to leave out the turkey shot with his fanned tail. Gobble-gobble.

    1. Yes, I can easily pick you up in Truckee on the way thru. Just let me know where you want to meet! However, this begs a question for the group....

    2. Should we be considering an 8am departure instead of a 9am departure, given that we have a 5 hour drive to the park? This would mean picking Patricia up at 9ish instead of 10ish? Let me know if this is feasible or not. I am OK either way. Also, arriving at the park and getting on the trail by 3pm should still be enough daylight to make Poverty Flat - our first night. But an extra hour would make it better. 3. A bag lunch for the drive down or a quick stop along the way is OK either way. I count 3 dinners (Th, Fr, Sa) and 3 breakfasts (Fr, Sa, Su) with 3 midday snacks on trail. Dinner on the way home will have to be a stop somewhere. 4. On the way down we will need to discuss trail / trip logistics to firm up anything else.

Have you been to Wild Cherries in Truckee? For a buck in the jar and your own cup, a very nice coffee selection.

I'm working on a safe place to leave my car in Truckee. The earlier time is fine with me.

The weather forecast is improving for this trip. I'm starting to pack my backpack. # of meals. Would that be dinner Thursday through breakfast Sunday morning for a total of 8 meals? Plus a sack lunch for Thursday? Also I would like to meet you in Truckee if possible.

The current 10 day forecast for Morgan Hill is suggesting 50% rain showers for 3 of the 4 days we will be in the park. Unlike the day hike this weekend, I cannot move this trip due to work scheduling issues, and will be planning to go regardless. Hopefully, you will remain interested in the trip. It will improve your skills (lol) !

I am still going! Let's hope that we have the 50% no precipitation!!

Rain, rain, go away all the way over the hill to Fallon! I'll be there, Lee. What's rain anyway? I've forgotten what it looks like.

That will make 4 of us in one car (Jeep), which should not be an issue. If any others decide to attend, a second car will be necessary! I'm excited! And thankful for a bit more rain.

I'm thinking about it. I have a new backpack which I haven't packed with yet. Do you still have room for one more person? We were on the Hat Creek Rim last week brushing and logging out trees. Did a lot of walking. Also have been hiking frequently.
