Offshore wrecks with Diver Down (day one of 2) August 25th

  • Aug 25, 2012 · 6:00 AM
  • Diver Down

Triangle Scuba Group managed to get a weekend with Diver Down in August!  Every other weekend is booked, so we lucked out. That's the best month of the year for NC diving- the water can be in the 80s, and the vis up to 100 feet.

We can do what we want- wrecks or reefs, the boat is ours.  My preference is to hit something less visited like the Naeco bow, or the live bottom area. Leave a message as to your preferences and we'll figure it out.

This is a 2-day trip, but often people can only make one day.  If we get full, preference goes to those diving both days.  Be sure to sign up for the second day.

The cost of each day is $120, no fuel surcharges (but don't forget to tip).

Don't contact Diver Down- the trip is set up though the meetup group.  Diver Down has tanks for rental for whoever needs it, but no other gear.

We got out to some nice wrecks, while dive shop O did 4x dives on the Indra. Had a great time and a great cookout despite that spearfisherman guy who didn't bring back any fish!

Really good dives. Lot's of nice people! We DID NOT DIVE THE INDRA!

There may be spots open- check with me directly before signing up.

The weather looks amazing! Shall we have a cookout on Saturday night? Any volunteers? I hope to provide fresh fish...

    August 22, 2012

    • Heather

We can bring something - if there's time to make a store run after the dive and before the cookout, we can pick up whatever is needed and plan to bring some beverages.

      August 23, 2012

    • Yoav

I'll make a run to the food lion after the Saturday dive to get whatever is missing for the cookout.

      1 · August 23, 2012

  • Chris B.

BTW - Natalie and I are in for the cookout. What don't we have yet? We are happy to bring. Also, if anyone who is bringing a significant other that is not diving, Natalie would probably enjoy some company on the beach.

    August 23, 2012

    • Heather

Hi Chris, I'm bringing a friend that is visiting, who may be happy for beach company on Saturday.

      August 23, 2012

  • Chris B.

Even though she is being very demanding, I agree with Kelly on that one ;) If I want to dive reefs, I'll go somewhere known for their reefs (like Bonnaire in Feb, there is a meetup for that). In the Graveyard of the Atlantic, we should probably dive some grave sites.

    August 23, 2012

  • Frederick

We will decide where to go in the morning- want to get vis reports. Choices are east side, sub and schurz, papoose, naeco, tropical reef.

    August 23, 2012

    • kelly

id prefer wrecks to reef please! =) ill cross my fingers on the east side dangit!

      August 23, 2012

  • Frederick

Atlas and caribsea are a pair on the east side. Last vis report was bad but hoping done an update on them . S sites have good vid

    August 23, 2012

  • kelly

ATLAS chris we had already talked about trying to do the ATLAS ;) ...is that by the carribsea frederick? would those two be a possiblitly?

    August 23, 2012

  • Laura

Kelly, Steve and I are carpoooling down on Friday -- we're planning to leave Raleigh around 3, so should be in Atlantic Beach between 6 and 6:30. Let me know if anybody wants to meet up for dinner that night (my cell number is[masked]). For the cookout, we're bringing: spices for cooking the fish, a jar of peach salsa that should be fantatic with the fish, a pecan pie, 2 small bags of charcoal, and the paper products/utensils. See everybody Saturday morning on the boat, if not sooner!

    August 23, 2012

  • Chris B.

So, are we offiical. 7 AM Sat. 6:30 AM Sun? I don't really care what wrecks we dive. I'd rather get a little more sleep on Saturday, if I had my preference. Do we know what wrecks we want to dive? Any chance we might make it out to the U-boat. I'd like to do that one again. Also, the Shurz.

  • Frederick

Does anyone know Frankie W? I don't think I've gotten a deposit from him and he hasn't responded to my email...

    August 22, 2012

    • Laura

I sent him a message through Facebook and asked him to get in touch with you!

      August 23, 2012

  • Frederick

The captain says we can leave later... but that means we might lose out on getting the dive site we want.

    August 23, 2012

  • Yuan

Hey guys if anyone still has a spare bunk bed or whatever pls gimme a shout. Appreciate it!!

    August 22, 2012

  • Frederick

Good ideas, Chris. That works for me, let's say 6:30 at the shop on Saturday, 7 on Sunday? I'll check with the captain and confirm.

    August 22, 2012

    • Yoav

Don't you mean the other way around, 7 on Sat and 6:30 on Sun?

      August 22, 2012

    • Frederick

Yes- sorry- you're right. 'Late' on Saturday, being 7, and earlier on Sunday being 6:30.

      August 22, 2012

  • Chris B.

Frederick, what time are we meeting on Saturday morning for the charter? I'm staying a few miles away at the Hampton Inn. I vote for a later start time on Saturday since most of us are going to be diving Sunday, and an earlier dive time on Sunday so we can get out of dodge Sunday evening.

    August 22, 2012

  • Frederick

For Saturday, I've gotten deposits from Ashton,Chris B, Yoav, Kelly, Rick, Laura, Sean, Charles, Ann, Heather.

    July 28, 2012

  • Frederick

I've started moving people off who have not sent deposits. Spots are available...

    July 27, 2012

  • Charles

My vote would be to do the reef on Saturday and hit the east side (Atlas & Caribsea) on Sunday (shorter trip)

    July 24, 2012

  • Frederick

Email sent about deposits ($20/day)- if you didn't get it, be sure to contact me.

There is nothing wrong with Fisherman's Inn - it's an older, family-owned business that's two doors down from the dive shop. It's not new or modern, but it's perfectly fine! Just saying...

    May 30, 2012

  • Chris B.

I'm staying at the Hampton Inn in Morehead City (it's less than 3 miles away). As much fun as the Fisherman's Inn is, I think my girlfriend my kill me if I make her stay there again. That being said, if she stays at home, I will either have an extra bed at the Hampton or cancel and take up lodging at FI. TBD.

    May 30, 2012

  • Laura

It also has a small fridge and a microwave - and Billy will usually let us shower before hitting the road after a Sunday dive. :-)

    May 30, 2012

  • Frederick

That's great Laura! And a very good price considering it is high season. I've stayed at the lodge as well- better than it sounds with two bathrooms and lots of room.

    May 30, 2012

  • Laura

The Fisherman's Inn has a "dive lodge" -- basically an upstairs room with 6 twin beds/2 baths. Some of us have used it before, and it's a decent place. I have it reserved for Friday and Saturday nights -- cost is $140/night, split by however many are staying in there. Two people have expressed interest in using it for this weekend, so they get right of first refusal. Anybody else who's interested, let me know. I might be able to work out a bit of a break if you're willing to pay in cash.

    May 30, 2012

  • Frederick

Okay, I'm going to make it two separate 'events', so if you're going both days, sign up for both. If we get close to being full, preference goes to those going both days.

    May 27, 2012

  • Frederick

Since this trip seems popular, I'm going to open up the number to the max the boat holds. We'll get an additional discount if we fill it.

    May 18, 2012

  • Chris B.

I have only dove the U Boat once, would love to do that again. And I absolutely loved the Schurz. I'm totally up for the haunted ship, I can check that off my bucket list SEE GOHST...CHECK!

  • Yoav

Haunted wrecks, huge sharks, monsters, now that's how you sell a site.

    April 10, 2012

  • kelly

PLEASE PLEASE THE ATLAS!!!! Just one time and I'll drop it! :)

    1 · April 10, 2012

  • Frederick

I'm up for doing what the group wants to do- and if you guys want to see a haunted wrecks, so be it. That wreck creeps me out. I actually ran INTO a huge shark on it, he was probably running from one of the monsters that live in it and we scared each other. *shudder*

    1 · April 10, 2012

  • Laura

You know I want to dive the Atlas, but I'm OK with anything except the Indra!

I'm a marine biologist, so as long as there is marine life to see, I'm happy. I've done the Indra, Spar, Caribsea, and Atlas - but all in pretty low visibility conditions.

    March 20, 2012

  • Frederick

Can you be more specific? The only wrecks I don't want to hit are the ones that are over-done: the Indra, the Suluoide, the Hutton, the Spar. The next set are okay with me: the Aeolis, the Papoose, and even the U352. My favorites are the Schurz and the Naeco(stern). Then there are those on the East side: the Caribsea and the Atlas (shudder... it's haunted). There are some that almost never get hit: the Naeco Bow, the Bedfordshire, the Porta Allegra, and the live bottom reef (not a wreck).

    March 20, 2012

  • Yoav

Don't really mind which sites as long as there is something for us non spear fishing folk to see.
