Diving and Camping at JMR (Blanch) Quarry

Several of us have been talking about a camping/diving weekend for a while, so let's make it happen!

JMR is one of the PDRA quarries -- I am a member and can have up to 10 guests, so am limiting this meetup to 10 people.  We can raise that number if somebody else is a PDRA member. :-)

Rumor has it that the visibility in the quarry is usually excellent in October, and that there is all sorts of fun (trouble) to be found during surface intervals.

No air fills available on-site, but "Facilities provided at all quarries include changing areas (trailers or buildings), picnic shelters with tables, sanitation facilities, easy entry areas and parking. J.M. Robertson Quarry in Caswell County has a large building (over 3300 square feet) with electricity, where clubs and large groups can meet for social activities."

I'll send directions to the quarry closer to the event date.

Is there any sign from that address "1540 High Rock School Rd, Blanch, NC" that point me to the quarry ?.
When I google that address, it point me to the intersection of Hwy 62 and High Rock School Rd.

I think everyone should just plan to bring your own food - I'll have a small charcoal grill if you want to throw something on there.

Im interested to join but how do i get the tanks?

    October 9, 2012

    • kelly

you should be able to rent them from any shop around town. you need to rent as many tanks as you want to do dives as there is no where to fill them on site or even fairly close.

Hi - I'll be there Saturday as well - I've never been there: is their a procedure or do you just drive in? Forgive me, I'm new to quarries! Also, what's the ballpark bottom temp? Many thanks, Shane.

I just got reports of 30' viz with temps in the low 70's above the thermocline (which is usually around 30 feet). Rick is probably right once you drop below. You have to have a key to get in the gate, so just plan to call me when you get there -- I'll be sending out an email with the directions and my contact information on Monday. :-)

Bottom Temps are pretty chilly. There is a fairly substantial ledge with a plane and stuff like that that is around 30' when you drop off that ledge the temp drops as well. Viz is the best here that I have seen out of any quarry so far. There aren't any showers (or havent been the last few times I have been there) but there are port o potties and changing huts. There is also a fairly large shelter down by the water for eating, etc but you arent supposed to put your gear there. Ill see if I can dig up a pic or two.

It occurred to me that if I go up after work on Friday, I will be setting up a tent in the dark (and it's pretty dark up there after sundown). So, I decided to wait and go up early Saturday morning. Let me know if that's a problem for anybody!

I'm not going to be able to make it until Saturday after my run.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
