Hypatia refused to be categorized or adhere to society’s norms; moreover she was passionate in her pursuit of knowledge. This is a group which shares her enthusiasm, where new friends can be made and the dialogue is rich and lively.
We’re an East London non-fiction book group for women with some life experience under their belt who want more intellectual stimulation than the usual novel on the best seller’s list. We’re opinionated but not closed-minded, mature but young-at-heart. We respect what others have to share who are younger, but value the depth of insight that develops with time. We’re homemakers and professionals, PhD’s and the alumni of Life University. We’re interested in the multi-cultural world around us and don’t shy away from topics which may challenge preconceived notions. We understand that enriching one’s knowledge will occasionally require a journey outside of conventional thinking. The reading focus will primarily be about women, but we will explore other diverse topics as well including ecology, history, sociology, politics, science and spirituality.
Each meeting will be limited to 10 members and the format will be informal so that the conversation may flow naturally. While we are an inclusive group that understands disagreement can inspire further reflection, we will only tolerate civil, respectful behaviour. In that light, we ask that you value everyone’s time and maintain an updated RSVP status giving at least three days notice prior to an event (with the exception of occasional emergencies).
If any of this piques your curiosity, if you’d like to make new friends in an environment where the topics are serious but no one takes themselves too seriously, come join us for thought-provoking conversation over a cuppa.
