We are going to be running a brand new mountain hiking series soon after the first of the year: The WINTER Mountain Hiking 101 Series. Winter hiking adds new dimensions to the fun and excitement of our sport, but it also adds new challenges and a much greater degree of danger! Frigid temperatures, deep snow, and slippery ice require additional knowledge and skills, along with some fairly expensive gear -- well beyond what you have learned about in three season hiking. Your safety and the safety of the group are even more critical in the wintertime. Mistakes made in clothing, gear, or equipment, while in freezing conditions up on a mountain, can lead to disastrous results. Snow-blindness, frostbite, hypothermia, dehydration, slip-and-fall injuries, sudden white-out storms, ... all with real potential for a fatality.

Our own club's experienced leaders will be providing the on-trail instruction, guidance, and tips & tricks for the many aspects of winter hiking, such as body temperature and sweat management, calorie and water management, snow and slippery conditions hiking techniques, self rescue techniques, safe practices, etc. This will be done on the trail as we work our way through the the series of progressively higher and more difficult climbs.

But first, before you even set foot on a trail, you have to know about, and have, all the very specialized clothing and equipment that is required for these Winter hikes. The upcoming AMC workshop at Cranston REI will tell you everything you need to know about it. Rhode Island Hiking Club "Walks and Rambles" is making attendance at this workshop a MANDATORY PREREQUISITE for attending the upcoming hiking series. You must be registered for this workshop before being allowed to sign up for the series when we post it in a few weeks.

This one-evening workshop - led by the Appalachian Mountain Club - is for three-season hikers who are interested in getting into winter hiking. You will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss the clothing and gear you will need in order to stay warm and safe while hiking in winter. Clothing, footwear, snowshoes, crampons, and other equipment will be demonstrated and discussed by The Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMC) Northern Hikes Winter Leaders and is co-hosted with REI Cranston. These AMC leaders are experts in Winter hiking with lifetimes of experience to share with you. I know them personally, I have hiked with them, they are the best there are. An opportunity to learn from them is a privilege that you won't want to miss.

This workshop is absolutely FREE, however, YOU MUST REGISTER BEFOREHAND in order to attend. There are going to be only 40 attendees allowed, and it will fill up fast. Don't be shut out - REGISTER HERE NOW:  http://www.rei.com/event/55036/session/84008

NOTE:  Please be aware that attending this mandatory first step does not automatically guarantee you a spot in the series. For everyone's safety there will be a screening process for suitability and qualifications of all applicants.
