Fort Nature Refuge Hike / Weber hike # 31

  • December 31, 2012 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Distance: 3.75

Duration: 2 hours + -

Event rating: Easy  ( w/ some ups and downs and loose rock footing)

We will hike at a moderate pace not a stroll.

Even though this is an Audubon property we will be near areas where hunting is allowed. Blaze orange is required.

Please read this entire write up before signing up for this hike and understand and agree to the liability waiver.

Very small lot for parking will keep this hike to 10 hikers.

The Florence Sutherland Fort & Richard Knight Fort Nature Refuge consists of a 235-acre woodland which contains the headwaters of the Woonasquatucket River. Three small ponds all made by the Fort family, and a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees provide diverse habitat for wildlife. This refuge is part of the RI Audubon Society properties.

This refuge consists of 3 trails that loop through the woodlands. Total distance 3.75 miles which should take  2  hours + or - . There are some ups and downs here, but nothing too strenuous. I have seen deer and wild turkey and beaver here on previous visits.

A good pair of hiking boots, drinking water and snacks are a must.

Directions: Take I-295 to Exit 8B (RI 7 North). Follow RI 7 to Providence Pike; bear right onto Providence Pike. Go across at the intersection of RI 5 and RI 104. The refuge is 1/2 mile on the left, (the first left after the Primrose Fire Station).

Sorry to miss this but I was able to ski the place today. Saw all the adventurous tracks from youz guys. What, no pictures? Who led folks off the reservation and onto the pipeline? Had to extend my trek even further to find untrodden trails and found some otter tracks! Happy New Year to the coolest people I met in 2012.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
