Weber Hikes Followup

Hi Everyone,

The response to the survey message that was sent out concerning the 40 Ken Weber hikes was very strong. More than 60 members expressed an interest in doing some, or all of the hikes. Based on this response, the club will go forward with the Weber program. All of the 40 hikes will be offered, and because of the size of the response each hike will have to be offered multiple times over a long period of time.

I’ll be tracking the completion of Weber hikes as they are held. Hikes will be posted in the usual manner, and the Weber hikes are open to all members of the club. The hikes will be identified as being in the Weber series when they are posted. We will continue to post a mix of easy to strenuous hikes, as we have always done. Based on information supplied in the write-up, the member has to make a decision if a posted hike is a good fit for them. It would not be a good choice for a person with little hiking experience to attempt a hike with a strenuous rating. You can find a file listing the names of all 40 hikes in our Files section if you are curious about them.

We have a number of people in the 60+ who have responded that have not done a hike with the group. Because of this, I’m going to give some information below about the group that is mostly contained in the “About Us” and the group’s “Frequently Asked Questions” pages. If you are familiar with the group’s operation, just skip the rest of this message.

• This is a hiking group for adults. As a general rule, neither children nor dogs are allowed on our hikes.

• Participation is limited to people who are on the attending list. Sometimes this is limited to members, most times members are allowed to bring a guest (a "+1").

• Hikes usually fill up quickly when they are posted. Once a hike is full, people can join a waiting list. If people who are on the attending list change their RSVP, people on the waiting list join the attending list. Hikes will get repeated, so just attend the next time when a hike is full.

• The size of groups on different hikes will vary. The person leading that hike makes that decision. Multiple factors influence that decision, including available parking and the type of terrain.

• We have a hike rating system, which takes into account length, type of terrain, elevation gain, and pace. Pay close attention to the rating to be sure a hike is a good match for you.

• Be sure to wear proper footwear. Sneakers are not good footwear for anything beyond paved paths.

• During a few months of the year, a fluorescent orange vest (or hat) may be required. This is a DEM requirement in some areas that we hike, and you will see this called out on hike pages.

• Be sure to bring adequate water. Especially with summer coming, it is wise to always bring water with you on a hike. Lumbar packs are inexpensive, and can hold a water bottle or two.

• Sunscreen is important during the summer months. Insect repellent is also important to protect you from ticks and other insects.

• Please be courteous to your fellow members on RSVPs. If you cannot attend a hike that you signed up for, change your RSVP to free up a spot for another member Not changing your RSVP when you will not be attending is being a "no-show", and that keeps your fellow members waiting to start a hike.
