Lickinghole Creek Brewery Enlightened Despot Imperial Stout

  • March 1, 2014 · 12:00 PM
  • Dover Hall

UPDATE! ABC has informed LCCB that they CANNOT sell bottles for off-premise at Dover Hall! Everything else, though, is unchanged. RBL will still be meeting at Dover Hall at noon for a first taste of the Enlightened Despot Imperial Stout.

If you want to buy bottles, you will need to go to the brewery on your own (Lickinghole Creek is at 4100 Knolls Point Dr, Goochland, VA 23063). In fact, the brewery will open for bottle sales for RBL only at 11am, then at noon for the general public.

March 1 marks the bottle release of the Enlightened Despot at Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery. After having spent four months in 15-year-old Pappy Van Winkle barrels, this Russian imperial stout will undoubtedly be enlightened, rich and rarin' to go. Brewed with 10 specialty grains and weighing in at 11.3% ABV and 73 IBU, the Despot will make you feel like royalty!

The event will start an hour early for the Richmond Beer Lovers for us to have a first taste of the Enlightened Despot Imperial Stout.

Event description straight from the LCCB folks:

Due to the overwhelming response we’ve gotten from people from around the country for our Bourbon Barrel Stout release on Saturday March 1st, we had to find a larger space to accommodate everyone. Since we wanted to keep Despot Day in Goochland we reached out to the only place as extravagant as the Enlightened Despot…Dover Hall. They graciously accepted our request and we are very proud to parter with Jennifer McBride and her awesome team to bring Virginia a one of a kind beer release event.

Dover Hall is a private estate located in the rolling hills of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, conveniently situated in between Richmond and Charlottesville, and a two hour drive from Washington, DC. The estate’s 33,000 square feet command a majestic view of 55 acres of rolling hills and woodlands.

Known as Goochland’s Castle, this larger than life venue is the perfect setting for releasing a one of a kind beer.

Live music will be provided by Richmond Blues Legends Barrelhouse and the The Big Payback, a musical powerhouse, dedicated to recreating the music of James Brown as accurately and as passionately as possible.

There will also be one of a kind Cask-Conditioned versions of the Enlightened Despot only available during Despot Day. Each variant will be released at different times during the day.

I had a great time pouring beer and an even better time once I was able to sit on the other side of the bar.

Lickinghole Creek hosted an awesome party with a fantastic feature beer, and their willingness to open it up to RBL an hour early and tell us a little more about their beer and brewery was wonderful. Even better was being able to mingle with so many RBLers! Thanks to all who came!

Also selling bottles of Tripel and Saison at Dover but for on-premises consumption only. For those who prefer to have those two bottle conditioned rather than on tap.

The band, the Big Payback, is excellent. Its a James Brown cover band that does a great job.

Big Payback doesn't come on until later, FYI .. event page says 5 or 6 . Barrelhouse is at 2, great blues band. It'll be a great day of music all around!

OK...I feel like a complete newbie here -- well I am a newbie at this type of event, lol, so excuse my questions! :-) We are getting tastes of the beer. Is there a charge for the tastings? I understand they can't sell bottles to take home but are they selling glasses of the beer to drink and will they have any other beers there or do we need to go to the brewery?

Dave, if it's like previous LCCB events they will be selling drink tickets and issuing wristbands. If you buy a tulip or pint glass, that's what gets filled at the tap. If not, you get a 12 oz. plastic cup. At least that's what they've done the past couple of times.

Hey, everyone, Sean and Lisa at LCCB has offered another great perk for RBL members! The brewery will open for bottle sales FOR RBL MEMBERS ONLY at 11am, then at noon for the general public! So you can have your cake and eat it, too--get your bottle and join fellow RBLers at Dover Hall at noon. (We will not meet at the brewery, just at Dover Hall.) Address: 4100 Knolls Point Dr, Goochland, VA 23063).

Does this start at 11 or 12 for people that signed up on here? Amy is it over at 2:00?

    1 · February 24, 2014

    • Todd H.

Will there be a separate line or a list of rbl members that will be allowed in?

      February 24, 2014

    • Annie

The general public knows the start time as 1:00, so you can just identify yourself as an RBL member when you get there early.

I will be driving from the West End (not far from Hurley's) to Dover Hall and have room for two or three people. I'm planning to be there at noon and won't be leaving until the end, but if you're in for the long haul and want a lift let me know.

    February 21, 2014

  • Gary H.

BTW Lickinghole confirmed that there is no bottle limit, so if you want to stock up, you can. I know I'll be picking up two bottles! :)
