In view of feedback from the meeting, I've started a sister Meetup group! Please join and spread the word! http://www.meetup.com/PowhatanEcoVillage/

Does anyone who attended this meetup go to the Sunday morning service at First Unitarian?

Very interesting and informative - a great group to spend an afternoon with and the developers were terrific.

Sorry, it looks like I won't be able to make it today

What is the name of the developer/co? Website? And is this meetup solely for this Meetup group, or a collaboration, or open to anyone? Thanks!

I'll have to ask permission. Please do save some of your great questions for the meeting and ask them in person. There are no fixed answers at the moment. We are starting a dialogue, one that I hope will be informative and productive for all compatible parties! :)

No problem... in the meantime I will meditate on the concept of pragmatic idealism :D

Serendipity caused me to stumble upon this article today in Communities magazine: http://communities.ic.org/articles/1641/Achieving_Affordability_with_Cohousing

I should have kept it in mind that this is the Cohousing Meetup group, that those principles would be implicitly applied to an offshoot ecovillage initiative. I think that is what Yoomie may have been hinting at in her response to my original comment. I am still learning, and I do have some misconceptions/preconceptions to get over. Sorry, Yoomie!

(I intended to get involved with this group when I joined up last November, but a rough move over the winter left me mentally & physically exhausted for some time)

Great article drobraeon. Thanks for sharing it!

I look forward to "having a conversation"with others interested in a greener, kinder way of living with some cooperation in areas such as growing food/gardening, recreation, perhaps transportation and general community. Bill and I will see you there.

Great - we look forward to it.

So you got my attention with "ecovillage". However, phrases like "developer/builder" and "homes priced in the $200s" throw up red flags for me. Should I consider myself disqualified for this venture if I do not currently have access to that amount of fiat and do not wish to become a debt-serf-for-life to obtain it?

That is completely understandable. Time is often more precious and scarcer than money! Depending upon who is in the room, we may just have open discussion the entire time. Hope to see you there!

As a stay-at-home dad, I have plenty of time, but most of it belongs to my kids... Those rare opportunities I can take to get out on my own, I must use wisely in order to keep myself in my wife's good graces :D

For comparison purposes, here is a link to Ecovillage at Ithaca's current rental and for sale listings: http://ecovillageithaca.org/evi/index.php/membership/rentals-and-houses-for-sale.

Yes, and from the photos these homes appear to be very upscale. Or, at least, my perception of upscale... It appears I have a different concept of ecovillage, one that is more bare-bones, frugal, made-by-one's-own-hand (owner-builder). Hence my negative reaction to the $200k price range... I do not intend to be argumentative or combative; I only seek to come to an understanding. If we disagree, I will agree to disagree.

    Yes, I'm interested.

Sorry, I will be at motorcycle rally this weekend

If there's sufficient interest, a separate "sister" Meetup group will be formed for us ecovillagers!
