Mountaineer 1. An inhabitant of a mountainous area. 2. One who climbs mountains for sport. (The American Heritage Dictionary)
Seeing as Richmond features an average elevation of 166.45’ and a towering maximum elevation of 312’, Richmond-based alpinists use the second of the two definitions provided above.
Interested in climbing big mountains, both domestic and international? Looking to tick off more state highpoints? Psyched about ice climbing (both here in Virginia and elsewhere)? Seeking to improve your rock climbing skills? Then Richmond Mountaineers is the Meetup group for you!
We’ll offer several long training hikes each month, at least one monthly social meetup, and the opportunity to learn new skills such as crevasse rescue, snow and ice anchors, and avalanche safety. And we’ll throw in an occasional snow shoeing, skiing, mountain biking, or out-of-town rock climbing event just to mix things up. Most importantly, we’ll offer an environment in which people can share knowledge and interests as well as plan trips. The organizer has many destinations on his wish list, but members are encouraged to propose their own objectives and goals.
The group meets every Tuesday and Friday at 6:30 PM at Peak Experiences.
Anyone who is interested in trying rock climbing is welcome to mention "Richmond Mountaineers" - you will get a discounted day pass for $10 (normally $17).
Non-climbers are welcome to climb, but to belay at Peak Experiences you will have to be belay certified - Peak has belay instruction classes every weekday evening at 6:30 PM.
