August Book Discussion

We will be discussing While Beauty Slept by Elizabeth Blackwell.

We are meeting at Beauregard's Thai Room, for those of you that do not get downtown that often it is easy to find and park. Heading east on Cary you will see the parking lot on the right first. The restaurant is also on the right you have to cross one street to get to it. Just ask for the Book Club when you get there, usually we are seated upstairs.

Please remember your RSVP is very important! If you cannot make it please update your RSVP  even if it is on the same day as the meetup. We book the tables and the restaurant organizes their staff based on our booking so it is very important to get the number right.

I am so happy to see that others are exploring Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I am also glad people seem to like "While Beauty Slept." I enjoyed it, but I still like "Cinder" better.

Hotel was so good, I had to move on to the author's other book, Songs of Willow Frost. Amazing writing and books you just can't put down!!

We had a nice quiet sort of corner with great discussions. Lets do it again sometime soon. What is the next book and where to meet? It seems so many people have already read "Cinder," maybe we could discuss that?

I had a great time. As a newbie it was a really welcoming group. I look forward to next month.

And reading the comments (belatedly) and hearing the discussion last night has moved Cinder to next on my list.

I have been looking for a book club and just discovered this one today. I am interested in reading this months book, but will never finish in time.

  • Laurie

I'm only a third of the way through the book, but so far it's pretty good. Hope to have a lot more read by tomorrow.

    August 19

  • Seenu

Sorry to miss another gathering. My family is back from India and we have little time before schools start again. Looking forward to our September gathering! Enjoy the discussion!

If you enjoy the fairy tale fantasy genre, I also recommend "Indexing" by Seanan McGuire (actually, you can't go wrong with any of her books). It's a fun story and a different take on fairy tales. And it's a great listen if you like the audio versions.

    1 · August 17

  • Scott B.

You should also read "American Rust" cuz it'll likely be brought up as well since that was such a good read. Hope you are liking "Cinder."

  • Linda A.

I am so excited to meet everyone. I am new to the group. I read "Beauty" and based on the discussion am now reading Cinder.

Back when I was in the "banking industry" downtown, a small hoven of evil bankers and myself of course, would meet for lunch there. I was included only because I was the "IT" guy and you absolutely never ever want to get on the wrong side of the computer guy. Thus, many free lunches, it was a whirl wind of thankfulness in the good old days.

    August 14

    • Lauren

I'm in IT and I have never had this experience in 14 years of working in the industry. You're lucky. And now I'm jealous.

I'm glad it is all in order now cause I love their food. We can now go forward

    August 14

  • Scott B.

Sounds like the food authorities have things under control. I agree; I liked "Beauty" a lot better than "Cinder," however "Cinder" held my interest once I got into it. It took a few chapters to figure out what it was going on.

I must have missed that channel 12 report on the Thai Garden. What did they have to say (about the food)? Meanwhile I have finished Cinder...it was not what I expected at all, but pretty cool and different. Are any club members cyborgs and also, is it ok to bring my android to the meeting?

    2 · August 13

    • Kari

Channel 12's Restaurant Report. It said "Beauregard's Thai Room at 103 East Cary Street, had 6 critical and 10 non-critical violations. The inspector wrote that metal bowls, cutting boards, and cups were soiled to sight and touch. They were cleaned and violations were corrected during the inspection. The follow-up report shows Beauregard's had one critical: food in the walk-in fridge was not cold enough. It was thrown out. "

      August 13

    • Kari

It appears everything was corrected. I've eaten there before and it was delicious.

If anyone is on the wait list for Beauty at the Westover Hills library, I just returned a copy today.

    August 5

  • Pat H.

Sorry I need to miss this one as a retirement party for someone I work with will be on that same evening. I'm enjoying the book. See you all next time :)

Ok, just bought it, thanks again!

    Great, Christina, thank you!

  • Scott B.

So is this "Cinder, the Lunar Chronicles" by Marissa Meyer? I want to make sure I download the right Nook Book...tx

    August 4

    • Christina

      yep that's it.

      August 4

    • Anne R.

It is a quick read and good audio. It is followed by (at the moment) two others: "Scarlet" (Red Ridding Hood) and "Cress" (Rapunzel). My favorite is Scarlet I think so far. Winter comes out in 2015.

      August 4

  • Laurie

I'm still waiting for a copy of this Month's book from the library, so I'm reading the sequel to Cinder. I'm all for discussing both While Beauty Slept and Cinder!

    1 · August 4

  • Scott B.

Also, I'm in the dark regarding "Cinder" Christina, did I miss a notification? I thought we were discussing "Beauty" this go round???

    August 4

    • Christina

Yes we are discussing beauty. One of the other choices happened to be Cinder which was read by several members with rave reviews. I'm intrigued so decided to read it

      1 · August 4

  • Scott B.

Finished "Beauty" in two days, it was really fascinating. I found there was some historical background from 12th century England loosely incorporated into the story including a king "Ranulf," pretty cool stuff!

    1 · August 4

  • Christina

Just got Cinder so will try to get through it before we meet. Really liked Beauty!

    2 · August 4

  • Lauren

Now that I've gotten the actual book for the month, I'm kind of thinking we should just have a compare/contrast discussion, since I've preferred Cinder to While Beauty Slept. :P

    1 · August 4

  • Christina

I really like the book and cannot stop reading (listening) to it either. Makes me want to get Cinders since that comes with such high reviews from our book club members!

    2 · July 25

    • Laurie

I am still waiting for a copy of this Month's book, but I finished Cinder yesterday... Awesome! Can't wait to read Scarlet next.

      2 · July 30

    • Lauren

Totally agree that Cinder is awesome!

      3 · July 31

  • Scott B.

It is a very short, 1 hour read, but worth the comparison to "While Beauty Slept"

    July 31

  • Scott B.

If you can pick up or download "The Medieval Anarchy" a short history, read it and you will find a lot of the basis for this story. Trust me, it is worth it!

    July 31

  • Scott B.

Had me from the moment I downloaded to my Nook. Read it in a day and a half. Great choice! There are actual characters based upon reality from the 12th century which makes it even more amazing. Blackwell has done her research!

    1 · July 31

  • maureen v.

I'm enjoying Blackwell's writing very much! Love the foreshadowing -Blackwell is a master.

    July 30

  • Lisa

I cannot put the book down!!

    6 · July 23

    • Lisa

Just finished and I could read it again! Wonderful!!

      July 26

  • Scott B.

Thanks, Chelsea...wish I could have joined for American Rust, that was an amazing story! I love the Thai Room, let me know for sure that is the place to meet.

    July 20

  • Sandra H.

I wish I could go, but I'll be on vacation. I'll probably read it anyway, though.

    July 18

    • Chelsea

Hope you have a great vacation!

      July 20

  • Scott B.

I'm back in, Chelsea; downloaded the book for my nook and will be ready for discussion on the 20th. Sorry I've been away for so long. So great to see how you have kept the club alive! How about the Tavern for a location again?

    July 18

    • Chelsea

Hi Scott, it has been a very long time! Welcome back! We are Downtown this month and usually meet at Beauregard's Thai room.
