5 mi hike in Beverly Shores, followed by pot luck & house concert in Chesterton

  • Apr 27, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • Rick's house

note: people have expressed some confusion about this day's events, so i will clarify.  it is actually 2 events back to back.  i will be doing the opener, so to speak, a loop hike of about 5 miles right out my front door to the beach and back.  the posted RSVP limit is for my hike, which i expect to end between 4:00-4:30.  i am busy in the evening, and will not be attending the second event, which will be

a pot luck, and a special house concert featuring Nashville singer-songwriter, Laurie McClain, held at the home of Jan in nearby Chesterton.  Jan has an RSVP limit of 30 for her event, and currently has about 9-10 coming.  she is asking for a donation of $15-20 for Laurie.  her address is 1021 Jefferson, Chesterton IN 46304 to contact Jan, [masked], or call[masked]-7758.

dear friends--

you are invited to an eclectic day of events, featuring hiking, food, music, and the usual good fellowship of friendly, interesting folks.

we will start at my house in Beverly Shores, where those bringing perishable pot luck dishes can put them in the refrigerator.  i will also pass a hat for a small donation to cover the cost of using meetup.

we will proceed right out my front door, and soon be on the Great Marsh trail, where we will make a brief stop at the waterfowl viewing platform before hiking the rest of the trail, at which point we will arrive at the Beverly Shores Historical Museum, with washrooms and drinking water http://www.duneland.com/aer/art-galleries/depot-beverly-shores-art-gallery-gift-shop-museum.html .

after that, we will continue east on the Calumet trail.  we may encounter some standing water on the Calumet trail.  there are 2 strategies to use to deal with this--i plan to wear hiking sandals, unless it is cold, in which i can gracefully go thru the water, and then take them off to walk barefoot on the beach.  the other strategy is to wear waterproof hiking boots.  i guess a third strategy might be to wear whatever you want, and have a change of shoes and socks in your car.

after the Calumet trail, we will walk the interesting streets of Beverly Shores over the marsh and down to the beach.  when we hiked this trail last spring, we encountered a cat-sized snapping turtle slowly crossing the road.  if this happens again, look, take pictures (and post them), but do not touch!

we will then walk about a mile and a half west along the beach.  last year, one other brave soul and i (and a dog or two) actually took a brief swim--this year. . .we'll see.

after that, you may proceed to Jan's house in nearby Chesterton for a pot luck, and a special house concert featuring Nashville singer-songwriter, Laurie McClain http://www.lauriemcclain.com/ .

some suggestions to make things run more smoothly

1)      print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

2) if you are going to be late, be sure to call me at [masked].  If you will be a little late, we will usually wait for you.  If you're going to be more than about 15-20 minutes late, I will tell you how to meet us farther down the trail so everyone else doesn't have to wait.

hope to see you there,

Rick

directions & parking instructions:

by car from Chicago: (driving time from downtown is about 1 hour 15 minutes) follow I-90 (Kennedy-Dan Ryan) East; at exit 59A, be sure to follow signs to "Chicago Skyway/Indiana Toll road"--the Skyway will turn into the Indiana Toll rd at the state line:  tolls can be paid with I-pass or cash; at I-90 exit 21, get onto I-94, be sure to go East (marked Detroit); exit I-94 at exit 26 marked IN 49 north; continue to US 12 east, continue on US 12 about 4 miles to Broadway (traffic light opposite National Lakeshore campground, gas station & liquor store on corner) and turn left; continue about 1/2 mile past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores, but our gracious neighbors, Henry & Mary are allowing us to use their parking spaces across the street (don't block their driveway!); if these spaces are taken, go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway:  if all the driveway spaces are taken, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions; please try to arrive by 1:00, we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the hike

from Northwest, West, or South suburbs: follow the TriState tollway (I-294) east until it merges with I-94 east; exit I-94 at exit 26 marked IN 49 north; go north to US 12 east (exit on left), continue on US 12 about 4 miles to Broadway (traffic light opposite National Lakeshore campground, gas station & liquor store on corner) and turn left; continue about 1/2 mile past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores, but our gracious neighbors, Henry & Mary are allowing us to use their parking spaces across the street (don't block their driveway!); if these spaces are taken, go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway:  if all the driveway spaces are taken, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions; please try to arrive by 1:00, we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the hike

by the South Shore line: get the South Shore at the Metra Electric stations at 10:45 AM at Randolph, or at Van Buren, Roosevelt rd, Hyde Park, etc; take the train to the Beverly Shores station (you will have to tell the conductor you're getting off because it is a flag stop); train arrives at 12:15; walk toward the lake (away from US 12) on Broadway thru the wetland, past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road, ring the doorbell (walk is about 15 minutes)—it’s all right if you arrive early, or call me and maybe someone can pick you up; check the website below for trains returning to Chicago; you also may be able to get a ride back to the city from someone else; please try to arrive by 1:00, we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the hike

here is the South Shore website: http://www.nictd.com/....

directions from Rick's house to Jan's house:

take Marne to Broadway, turn right, continue less than a mile to US 12, turn right; continue about 4 miles to IN-49, take IN 49 south (left turn ramp); continue several miles to Porter ave (past Indian Boundary, over a bridge), turn right; continue to 10 st, turn left; continue 1 block to Jefferson, turn right, and stop at 1021 Jefferson.  if you're not coming to the hike, but only to the pot luck and concert, contact Jan, [masked], or call[masked]-7758.

This last week really got away from me as I traveled to Bloomington on Sunday to visit with my son there and heard Laurie McClain play at Players Pub Monday night. Also hiked in Brown County-the dogwood and redbud were both in bloom. I wanted to thank everyone who attended the potluck and concert and brought such great food. I took left overs to the communal house where my son lives with 14 others and they enjoyed it all!
Thank you all for coming and thank you so much Rick for being open to trying something new! what a great group of people!

Absolutely fantastic! What a beautiful day for a hike!! The weather, the company, and the scenery were lovely. Jan did a wonderful job hosting the pot luck and the concert. Meeting and getting to know Laurie McClain was such a pleasure. Her music was fabulous. I shall be keeping an eye on her, her music, and career. Thank you, Rick and Jan for making this happen.

I will be doing the hike only. Looking forward to it. I forgot whether or not it's ok to bring my dog. I know the park allows dogs on leashes as I hike with her all the time.

I'm out at Ogden Dunes regularly during the off-season and I see leashed dogs there every time (even though they aren't supposed to be there). To date, I've never seen anyone get ticketed by a ranger, but I'm sure that's because it's not swimming season yet and there is low traffic presently.

This is a big "maybe" with the BEST intentions because running training season begins this month and I may have clients, but I will update my RSVP with plenty of notice. Looking forward to it. :-)
