Beach Ridge hike/swim/pot luck/game night

note:  tomorrow's local forecast calls for a high in the upper 70's, morning showers, and a 50% chance of afternoon scattered thunderstorms.  a few observations--1) that also means 50% chance of non-thunderstorms; 2)  "scattered" thunderstorms may miss us; 3)  rain with a temperature of 77 is very different from rain at 57, or 37; 4) we're meeting in the comfort of my home, we can wait out the rain, or if we can't, we can have a pot luck lunch and a game afternoon instead.

we have a lot of flexibility since we're meeting at my house--you may, however, want to bring a change of clothes and shoes.

hope to see you,

Rick

dear friends--

we invite you to a Saturday Funday, with something for everyone.  this will be a dog-friendly day, so feel free to bring your well-behaved canine (plus what you need to clean up after him or her).

we will start with a hike of about 5 miles right out my front door on the current then lost roads of Beverly Shores down to Lake Front drive, and to the Century of Progress homes.  after that we will hit the Lake Michigan shoreline, take a swim break, weather permitting, and enter the state park.  we will walk the shore to Furnessville Blowout, were we will pick up the Beach Ridge trail with lots of ups and downs to the Beach House Blowout, where the views will knock your socks off (unless you are already barefoot like I will be).

we will continue to the back of the Blowout, 120 ft above the lake, where we will walk/run/roll down to the bottom, then continue along the lakeshore back to Broadway and thence to my house.

be sure to check the weather just before the hike so you can be prepared with whatever gear is necessary http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301 . I hope to hike in swimming trunks and hiking sandals, and barefoot on the beach, and plan to go in the water.  we will have our lunch stop on the beach with full sun exposure, so even if you don't swim, you might want to be prepared at least to wade to keep cool.

Be sure to bring something to eat along, plus enough water (one quart minimum, two is better). Also bring sunscreen and a hat with a brim.  so far this year, there have been few mosquitoes, and our route will be either on the beach, or on high, dry ground most of the way, but use your judgement about insect repellent.

I will pass a hat for a small donation to cover the costs of using the meetup website.

of course there will be substantial refreshments when we return.  I plan to make a hearty pot of black bean and smoked sausage soup, and some barbecued ribs, but this will not be enough to feed everyone, so please bring something to share, a main course, side dishes like other chili, baked beans, a potato dish, etc, or snacks, wine, vodka, liqueurs, etc.  Grillmaster Carl will be manning the fire for whatever you would like to toss upon it, so feel free to bring some meat (real or fake), fish, vegetables, tofu or what-have-you.  If you’re coming on the train or otherwise can’t bring anything, don’t worry about it, we’ll be ok.

we will enjoy dinner, then segue to a game night with Taboo, Such and Such, and other friendly, laid-back games, then go our merry ways.

some suggestions to make things run more smoothly

1)      print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

2) if you are going to be late, be sure to call me at [masked].  If you will be a little late, we will usually wait for you.  If you're going to be more than about 15-20 minutes late, I will tell you how to meet us farther down the trail so everyone else doesn't have to wait.

hope to see you there,

Rick

The day was most enjoyable. It was a good hike, a delicious potluck, fun game time. The best part in my opinion were the friendly welcoming people. You couldn't help but have a good time

after a questionable morn, and maybe a half hour of light rain on the trail, the day turned sunny and glorious for our, er. . .6 1/2 mile hike, and indeed swim! abundant food and some lively games rounded out a grand day that didn't break up till midnight.
