for those coming from Michigan, remember Beverly Shores is on Central Daylight Time, same as Chicago.

if anyone has some speakers that will plug into a laptop or i-phone, please bring them for better sound quality on the podcast.

note:  because of continuing snow cover, parking is a bit problematic.  please read the following parking instructions carefully and adhere to them

go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway:

if all the driveway spaces are taken, then let out any passengers you have, and go past our house and turn around, so you are facing back toward Broadway (east); go past our driveway, and park as far to the right as you can:  if someone is already there, park just beyond them:  be careful not to block anyone's driveway.

depending on the exact temperature when you arrive, the driveway will either be an icy mess or a slushy mess, be very careful walking on it, same with the streets.  sorry, the snowblower won't work on it.

if you don't understand this, or all spaces are full up to Broadway, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions.

i hope you can all come to today's event, but do cancel if you can't.

thanks, Rick

dear friends--

we invite you to a Saturday Funday, with something for everyone.

we will start with a short hike right out my front door.  i arrived her Friday evening still in twilight, and took the time to check trail conditions. and tho quite a bit of snow has melted, the trail conditions still are varying between impassable, and a sloppy, slippery mess, so this will just be a 1-2 mile hike on the town roads.

on our last hike, a reckless driver came very close to hitting Patrice and me, partly because we weren't expecting a car, and he wasn't expecting pedestrians, but whatever the reason, it means we should be cautious walking even on these sparsely traveled roads.  we should really walk single file, or at least not all over the road.  usually, the left side of the road is the place to walk, but because of the hilly terrain, and curvy streets, we should shift to the right when the traffic ahead will be approaching us blindly.

be sure to check the weather just before the hike so you can be prepared with whatever gear is necessary http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301 .

I will pass a hat for a small donation to cover the costs of using the meetup website.

we will then return to my house for something a bit different that i hope you will find entertaining.  earlier this year, my daughters, Jen and Kim, who once threatened to call DCFS when we didn't renew our cable, brought a case against me in the comedic court of Judge John Hodgman, whom you might know from his appearances on The Daily Show.  we recorded a podcast with His Honor, entitled Father Gnaws Beast, and i thought it might be fun to listen to it together.

after that we will have a pot luck dinnerGrace thought it would be fun to have a soup cook off, with a semi-valuable prize for the winner.  This will be a blind test with telegraphing and lobbying prohibited.  if you would like to enter, bring a soup for the contest, and remember to keep it a secret which is yours.  please let me know if you will be entering the soup cook off.

f you're not making soup, please bring something else to share, a main course, side dishes like baked beans, a potato dish, etc, or snacks, wine, vodka, liqueurs, etc.  we will also have a grill available for whatever you would like to toss upon it, so feel free to bring some meat (real or fake), fish, vegetables, tofu or what-have-you.  If you’re coming on the train or otherwise can’t bring anything, don’t worry about it, we’ll be ok--just add a little extra when the hat is passed.

then, if there is interest, we will segue into a game night with Taboo, Such and Such, and other friendly, laid-back games, then go our merry ways.

some suggestions to make things run more smoothly

1)  print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

2) if you are going to be late, be sure to call me at [masked].  If you will be a little late, we will usually wait for you.  If you're going to be more than about 15-20 minutes late, I will tell you how to meet us farther down the trail so everyone else doesn't have to wait.

hope to see you there,

Rick

parking instructions are also at the top of the announcement

directions & parking instructions:

by car from Chicago: (driving time from downtown is about 1 hour 15 minutes) follow I-90 (Kennedy-Dan Ryan) East; at exit 59A, be sure to follow signs to "Chicago Skyway/Indiana Toll road"--the Skyway will turn into the Indiana Toll rd at the state line:  tolls can be paid with I-pass or cash; at I-90 exit 21, get onto I-94, be sure to go East (marked Detroit); exit I-94 at exit 26 marked IN 49 north; continue to US 12 east, continue on US 12 about 4 miles to Broadway (traffic light opposite National Lakeshore campground, gas station & liquor store on corner) and turn left; continue about 1/2 mile past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway:  if all the driveway spaces are taken, then let out any passengers you have, and go past our house and turn around, so you are facing back toward Broadway (east); go past our driveway, and park as far to the right as you can:  if someone is already there, park just beyond them:  be careful not to block anyone's driveway; if you don't understand this, or all spaces are full up to Broadway, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions; please try to arrive by 1:00, unless you don’t plan to go on the walk, in which case arrive by 2:30; we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the walk

from Northwest, West, or South suburbs: follow the TriState tollway (I-294) east until it merges with I-94 east; exit I-94 at exit 26 marked IN 49 north; go north to US 12 east (exit on left), continue on US 12 about 4 miles to Broadway (traffic light opposite National Lakeshore campground, gas station & liquor store on corner) and turn left; continue about 1/2 mile past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road; go to the end of our driveway and park on the right side, if someone is in that spot, park on the left side, next person park in the middle, following persons, go as far forward as you can and park single file in the driveway:  if all the driveway spaces are taken, then let out any passengers you have, and go past our house and turn around, so you are facing back toward Broadway (east); go past our driveway, and park as far to the right as you can:  if someone is already there, park just beyond them:  be careful not to block anyone's driveway; if you don't understand this, or all spaces are full up to Broadway, call me at [masked], or ring the doorbell and I'll give you instructions; please try to arrive by 1:00, unless you don’t plan to go on the walk, in which case arrive by 2:30; we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the walk

by the South Shore line: get the South Shore at the Metra Electric stations at 10:45 AM at Randolph, or at Van Buren, Roosevelt rd, Hyde Park, etc; take the train to the Beverly Shores station (you will have to tell the conductor you're getting off because it is a flag stop); train arrives at 12:45; walk toward the lake (away from US 12) on Broadway thru the wetland, past Beverly & Bellevue, and turn left at Marne, continue to 11 w Marne near the end of a cul-de-sac; our house is on the left, and is a gray, three story house set back rather far from the road, ring the doorbell (walk is about 15 minutes)—it’s all right if you arrive early, or call me and maybe someone can pick you up; check the website below for trains returning to Chicago; you also may be able to get a ride back to the city from someone else;we will wait till 1:30, then depart on foot right out the door for the walk.

Rick it was *so* very nice to finally see you again; finally the stars aligned and we were able to join you. We so appreciate your generosity and hospitality opening up your beautiful home to us. Our stay was so enjoyable, from the lovely hike through Beverly Shores to the lake and back, to the Father Gnaws Best podcast (what a hoot!) and the delicious food; just wish we could have stayed a bit longer and played games with the group. So nice meeting new faces and being graced with familiar ones, like Judy and Nancy. Looking forward to the next get-together. :-)

I am so sorry to have to change my reservation for tomorrow's outing; but because of today's weather conditions here in NW IN, I need to be with my dad on Sunday. My sister lives in the country in Chesterton and would prefer not going out on her roads, nor do I want to travel out there if I don't have to in these temps and winds because I end up driving home late into the evening. We'll see how tomorrow afternoon looks like as well. I am so tired of this weather---too cold, too much snow, too icy, and too windy. Spring, please, come soon!

Hey, Rick: I did check the weather and there's supposed to be a 70% chance of snow until Monday. Maybe it's just near me. Been freaked out driving to the city every day so I think I'll just stay home. See you the next time. Have fun.

    January 24, 2014

If I'm not flying I'll be there Rick. I'll await your final notice if it's a go.

  • Rick M.

Carolyn, i don't see any significant snow in the forecast, and it should be a balmy 34--think about coming.

    January 23, 2014

  • Carolyn

It sounds like fun, but I hear there's supposed to be a bunch of snow, so I guess I'll stay off the roads. Have a great time.
