Support group meeting/Hidden Beach hike & swim/pot luck/games

  • Aug 16, 2014 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

note:  since so many have signed up for this event, please make sure to cancel if you won't be coming

if you are skipping the support group meeting and coming for the hike, i suggest arriving about 12:30.  if you are only coming for the pot luck and games, i would arrive about 4:00 PM.  if you have any problems connecting, call me at[masked]-0428.

dear friends--

we invite you to a Saturday Funday, with something for everyone. we will start with the third session of our Goal-Focused Support Group

twelve of us met for the first session on March 1, and identified personal growth goals we would like to support each other in achieving.  some examples were weight loss, expansion of pursuits in the arts, real estate transactions, exercise programs, etc.  we have been communicating with each other and offering support and feedback via e-mail since then.

we had another session on May 3.  those present from the first session reported progress (or not) on their goals:  6 more people identified goals and asked for support.

for our third meeting on August 16, i would like to discuss the progress of anyone who has already identified goals, and invite anyone who did not identify goals at the first two meetings who would like to participate to identify a goal and present it to the group.

we are having the support group meeting before the other events to make it easy for anyone who does not want to join the support group to come later.  you are welcome to join the meeting without presenting a goal, or socialize on the deck or sunporch, weather permitting.  unfortunately the open architecture of our house prohibits any crosstalk not part of the meeting anywhere else inside on the floor.

after that, we will have a hike of about 5-6 miles to what i call the Hidden Beach.  this is a pocket beach which is isolated from the rest of the 11 Mile Beach from Burns Harbor to Michigan City by the Drexwood Rocks.  the only way to get here is to walk.  the nearest public parking is a 30 minute walk, and even the nearest local permit parking is a 12 minute walk.  so often, this beach, with good sand quality and clear waters is completely empty.  we will walk to the Hidden Beach, spend some beach time for lunch, a swim, and hanging out, then return.

on our return, i'm sure we will be ravenous, so we will glide right into a potluck dinner.   my coq au vin was well enough received before that i think i will try it again:  but this will not be enough to feed everyone, so please bring something to share, a main course, side dishes like chili, baked beans, a potato dish, etc, or snacks, wine, vodka, liqueurs, etc.  my new 6 burner Father's Day gift grill will be available for whatever you would like to toss upon it, so feel free to bring some meat (real or fake), fish, vegetables, tofu or what-have-you.

we are long on paper plates, plasticware, etc, from past contributions, and i plan to use down my inventory at this event, so don't bring any of those items, please.

I will pass a hat for a small contribution to cover the costs of using the meetup website.

If you’re coming on the train or otherwise can’t bring anything, don’t worry about it, we’ll be ok just add a bit extra when i pass around the hat.

after dinner, i hope we will have the time and the energy to play some games, as we usually have at the end of recent events.

some suggestions to make things run more smoothly

1)  print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

2) if you are going to be late, be sure to call me at [masked].  If you will be a little late, we will usually wait for you.  If you're going to be more than about 15-20 minutes late, I will tell you how to meet us farther down the trail so everyone else doesn't have to wait.

hope to see you there,

Rick

Rick, I goofed! I did not previously read this day's events through very well. I see the hike is not beginning until about one-thirty. I have to be ready to go into Chicago by 3:30. This is not going to work. So sorry about this. Hope to see everyone soon. Thank you!
