note:  with the temperature down 30 degrees, and the wind up, 20 mi/hr, i wanted you to know i'm watching the weather, and will make appropriate adjustments if necessary.  i will check the weather tomorrow morn, and if it will be too cold on the lakefront, i will re-route our hike inland.  my friend, Carl, also will be at my house holding the fort and welcoming those too late for the hike or too early for the pot luck.  lastly, we will have a cherry blaze in the fireplace to warm your bones and other parts.

the rest of my family is taking a trip South right after Thanksgiving, so i will be in charge of our lovely chocolate lab, Gambit.  since leading a hike and managing a dog is a bit to handle, i will be grateful for any help i can get walking him on the trail.  thanks.

hike/pot luck/pic show & tell/game night

in Beverly Shores

in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Saturday, November 24

starting at 12:30 PM

length of hike about 3-4 miles,

with chance to extend to 6-8 miles

mostly flat some difficult terrain on beach

sun exposure high (if there is sun)

dear friends--

We invite you to an eclectic event, with something for everyone.

Make sure to check the weather close to the date of the event and dress appropriately http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301 .  Be sure to bring along plenty of water (preferably 2 quarts), sunscreen, a hat with a brim, and a snack which we will eat along the way.

we will meet at 12:30 PM at our house in Beverly Shores, for a hike right out my front door.  we will walk on the lost roads of Beverly Shores, and the Dune Ridge trail.  we will stop at the National Lakeshore outdoor amphitheater for a break and snack.  i will recite an apropos poem or two, and anyone else who has something they would like to recite or read is invited to join me.  then we will continue thru the hole in the fence (shh!) onto state park trail 10, then back to my house along the lakeshore.

those who want to make a longer hike, can continue on trail 10 into the inland wooded trails, and continue west, with chances to return to the lakefront at the Furnessville or Beach House blowouts.  maps and suggested routes will be provided.  the rest (myself included), will return along the lake to my house for a barbecue and pot luck dinner.

after dinner, i would like to have a Rick's Hiking Group Photo Show & Tell.  i have some pics from the early days of the group to the present that i will show to anyone interested, and i would like to ask any of you who have Rick's hiking groups pics anytime from 2001 to the present, which you'd like to show, to bring them.  i hope to scan some of the best into the photo section of this event.

after that, if the time, numbers and acoustics are right, we could play some games.  we have some new games that can be played even if the general ambiance is noisy, so i think this will work out this time.

here is an approximate schedule (feel free to come to any or all of these events)

12:30   please meet at my house in Beverly Shores at 12:30.  directions by both car & train, and parking instructions, will follow later.  If you're bringing something perishable for pot luck, we can put it in the refrigerator.  Beverly Shores is in Indiana on Lake Michigan about 9 miles west of the Michigan state line, about an 1 1/4 hours from downtown Chicago.  if you're coming by train, you can wait for us at the station, for our hike route will pass thru there.

1:00    we will depart on foot right out my front door for our hike.  We will then walk about 4 miles.  I imagine by this time it will be approximately

4:30     and we will retire to my house for a bbq and pot luck, we will start grilling, and bring out the other food too.  We will keep the grill going for whatever you would like to bring to toss on it, so feel free to bring some meat (real or fake), fish, vegetables, tofu or what-have-you to cook. side dishes like pasta, baked beans, a potato dish, etc, or any other dishes, snacks, wine, etc are welcome too. If you are coming on the train, or its otherwise inconvenient to bring something, dont worry, well have enough. I will be making turkey tetrazzini (wonder why?) : )

If you are not coming to the hike, please call me before leaving home  at [masked], and I can give you a better idea of the rest of our schedule.

Remember, feel free to come to all or any part of this event, but you may want to call ahead [masked]) because, other than the start of the hike, the times are approximate.

a few suggestions to make things run more smoothly

1)      print out the announcement, or at least the directions ahead of time and bring it with you in your car if you are driving or navigating--I have frequently been delayed from arriving on time myself because I'm giving directions over the phone

2)      if you are going to be late, be sure to call.  If you will be a little late, we will usually wait for you.  If you're going to be more than about 15-20 minutes late, I will tell you how to meet us farther down the trail so everyone else doesn't have to wait.

On the morning of the hike, if we're expecting you and you aren't coming, call me on my cell phone so we don't wait for you.  If you get lost or are running late; call me on my cell phone [masked]), even if you're totally late, don't despair, call me on my cell phone and I should be able to tell you how to join us somewhere farther down the trail.

hope to see you all,

Rick

It was a great time! I thought it would be too cold, but the weather was perfect, the people were really nice (like last time!) and Rick is a fabulous host! Wonderful food at the pot luck, fun games, couldn't have been more fun! :D
