Use a small foundry to sand-cast aluminum

  • June 15, 2013 · 6:30 PM

We'll use a small blast foundry we've made to melt some aluminum cans. From there, we'll talke the molten aluminum and pour it into a sand-cast mold. Some of the guys have been asking for this - and there's no better time than the present. (Those who sign up for the event will be informed of the location.)

Cameron and Victor were great partners in melting aluminum!!

Stainless steel's melting point is more than double that of Aluminum. There are metals with lower melting points than Aluminum, but I don't think we want to use Lead, and Zinc has a 1/3rd the latent heat capacity and would therefore probably solidify even faster than expected. Actually, Aluminum has the very best latent heat of everything on this table (except water).

I think it will be worthwhile to engineer a tiltable crucible so that the mold can be brough to the molten metal and not vice versa. Lag time is killer! This should allow for cleaner pours and by extension, more elaborate molds.

That's a great idea. We could be more exact with our pours. I was doing some reading last night and it appears that sometimes you have to wait for the foam to ignite before pouring more on it. This is probably what happened last night.

The donut you created worked out perfectly, though!!!

Fantastic experience- learned a lot through trial and error, even when things turned out unexpectedly.

Hi John, sorry for the last minute notice but Michelle and I won't be able to attend. Hope to see some pictures.

This is interesting, though I am not sure if I'll be available. I likely won't know until mid afternoon.

Not looking like I can make it. Sorry!

Everyone, there's supposed to be a lot of rain tomorrow, so I am postponing this meetup until Saturday evening (6:30). This is an outdoor activity, so it will be better for everyone if the weather is better. I'm sorry if everyone can't make it - but that's my next free date/time. If you can't make it, we'll do this again real soon.

Awesome! I got rid of my car and am on a motorcycle. It would have been a hell of a ride over tonight.

Weather permitting, I'll be there. (Is this indoors?)

Hey, guys! Is this still on? (location?) I look forward to coming back up to CT, but please let me know because it'll be quite the drive for me

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
