Lets go down the Upper Haw!

This is a very fun run with a lot of class 1 & 2 rapids starting from the Chicken Bridge and continuing on to the 15/501 takeout. Its possible that this trip may be converted to the section of river immediately below this starting at the Bynum Bridge if water levels are high enough.

We will arrange shuttle operations to get all members and their equipment from the bottom of the river to the top after the trip. There is no fee for members with their own equipment. We will make equipment available for the fee of $45.00. However, this is not a trip for the first timers. For those who are interested in getting acquainted with this sport please click on this page for a good beginners run. Those needing equipment will be presented with an on-line payment option with your RSVP

Details for this trip can be found by clicking Upper Haw - Chicken Bridge to[masked]

Can the trailer carry my canoe, or should participate in the shuttle too?
Also, I won't be bringing a friend. I'll be paddling solo.

I got the take out info...so I'll meet you w/the trailer at[masked] Chapel Hill Rd, Pittsboro at 9:30. I'll be driving a silver honda pilot and you have my cell.

Sophie that will work if you have someone else carrying your kayak to the top.

I've changed the start date to 10:00 AM. I will need those involved in the shuttle operation to be at the launch point at 9:30 so we can get the vehicles staged at the take-out and get back on to the top.
Michael, I and someone else will leave our vehicles at the bottom.

Barry, you can meet us at the bottom at 9:45 to bring the drivers back to the top. Everyone else can be at the top at 10:00 to unload and get your equipment to the launch point. Please follow the trail from the parking lot towards the river. The trial has a cut off that goes under the chicken bridge to the other side of the road.

I still need some phone numbers so please send it to me if you haven't already. My number is[masked], that's 2132 WESLEY, or my email is [masked]

I will be out of pocket today after 5:00. I'll try to respond if I can to any questions but I'm trying to get the details ironed out now.

I hate that I haven't been able to come to any events since joining... The next few weekends are booked, but maybe mid May I will be able to get out and join the fun!

I'll be paddling a canoe with either my son or a friend. I've been on this section of the Haw several times before, although it has been a while. Thanks for organizing this.

Doug, how big is your Canoe? I ask because I need to know to coordinate all the ferrying needed for the group. How many boats can you transport?

      April 24, 2013

    • Doug M.

It is a 16 foot canoe. I can carry 2 canoes on my rack. I've never carries kayaks before, but can probably carry 1 canoe and two kayaks.

The described section is the Upper Haw, not the Lower Haw. Below Bynum Bridge is the Middle Haw.

    • Wes B.

Hi Rick, I have been corrected on this before. I'm sure that you are correct. I have left it in place to differentiate between this section and the area above the town of Haw River that I first started creating events for. I was calling it the Upper Haw. I guess I'll have to get in line with the publications.

Thx, was just concerned you'd get someone mixed up, and end up somewhere they didn't want to be! :-) People refer to the sections above there as the put-in/take-out points (i.e. 54 to Saxaphaw)
