Lets go down the Neuse River!

** Change of Destination **

Because the water is moving faster and our trip will be shorter I am going to extend our trip from the designated take-out to Auburn Knightdale Rd. It will still take about 2 - 21/2 hours. The Put-in will be the same and you can Google Auburn-Knightdale Rd and the river to see where we are going.

This 2 hour paddle starts off at the section of river near Old Milburnie and Newburn Rd in the Knightdale area. Any member with their own equipment can participate without a fee.

You can find details for this trip like maps to the put-in and take-out locations, current river heights, etcby following this link: Neuse River - Raleigh Beach to Poole Rd

What a great evening for kayaking! Rain just missed us clearing the skies for a beautiful and comfortable easy drift. Lazy riding!

Had a good time. The water was so high there were no rapids at all.

I think I'm going to pass. It's storming where I am and it's about a 45 minute drive for me.

Hi Cat, I'm about 2 min from where we are going to get off. The rain has already passed here and cleared up

Clear in Clayton. Storms have passed.

We have to stage 5 kayak carrying vehicles at the bottom before we get on the river. So we will need to bring 5 drivers back to the top of the river. I need two vehicles who are not carrying kayaks to follow the parade down from the top to the bottom and bring the drivers back.

    Any volunteers?

Hi Carlos, I may need you to unload and follow us down to bring the drivers back. We can get your kayak on my truck at the end.

Sounds good. See you at the put in.

It's raining now but I fully expect to keep the event open. It will likely blow over and if we get a little wet it won't matter. However. If anyone decides not to go please change your RSVP so I won't be waiting for you.

Wish I could offer, but Dad and I aren't 100% on our arrival time as of yet. He's finishing up work in Chapel Hill. Sorry! Also want to make sure our vehicles parked at the put-in at Loch Raven will still be accessible after-dark? Not sure if they lock the gates. I figure Wes has everything straightened out and down to a "T" by now.

I can help if needed. Can carry one additional kayak and passenger.

Looking forward to this. One question, how is the shuttling back to put-in handled?

    July 8, 2013

Because the water is moving faster and our trip will be shorter I am going to extend our trip from the designated take-out to Auburn Knightdale Rd. It will still take about 2 - 21/2 hours. The Put-in will be the same and you can Google Auburn-Knightdale Rd and the river to see where we are going. I'll coordinate the shuttle tomorrow.

How does this section look in light of the recent rains? I know this is much calmer than the sections of the Haw that have been in the news lately, but I also know that high water changes the character of a river in a big way...

    July 7, 2013

    • Wes B.

Good morning Kevin, the water is up about 2 1/2 feet at the Falls Lake Dam from normal and is flowing at good rate. But this does not compare to the Haw River. There will not be any hazards to speak of.

Coming w/ my Dad, who has kayaked before many times. Will need to rent 2 kayaks from you.

  • Joe

I'm a newbie to kayaking, so hope I won't be getting in over my head here.

    July 2, 2013

    • Wes B.

Its no problem Joe. The Neuse is a calm river with small rapids that you will sail right through. Hope you can join us!

I can make the change to the 9th

This a hard call a day ahead but the weather is looking very doubtful for Tues evening. WRAL is showing a 80% chance of rain. I am going to proactively move this event to the follow Tues, 7/9. Your reservations will stay in place so if you can't keep the date pleas go in and change your RSVP. Thanks!

Would this be a reasonable first trip for a 14-yr-old boy who's bored with lake paddling? I (dad) did a little whitewater paddling 25 years ago. We have 12 & 14 foot sit-on-tops.

    June 28, 2013

    • Wes B.

Hey Kevin, yes this would be a good trip. Any on the Neuse would be good trip. I meant to get back to you about the Haw but didn't get around to it. the Haw would not be a river to take a beginner on.

Thanks. Silly question - we meet at the put-in at Loch Raven park in time to be unloaded and ready to go at 6:00, right? I've been paddling lakes so much lately I'm not up to speed with shuttle protocols...

We'll watch the wx, of course, but plan on two of us. We have gear and can carry my two SOT's on my Highlander.

My job is too far and I wouldn't make it. Next time.
