Lead Climb Training

Learn to lead climb with Hangar 18! This class is FREE TO MEMBERS, and costs $25/class for non-members. The first section of our lead class focuses on teaching clipping and lead climbing methods. Topics covered in this class are same-gate and opposite-gate clipping technique, understanding the inherent dangers involved in leading, as well as backclipping, degloving risks, z-zlipping, toe-tucking, high clipping, developing muscle memory for clipping motions, mock leading, and footwork rope management. Class two in our lead climbing class. This class focuses entirely on lead belaying, and covers the four main aspects of lead belaying: Climber backup (looking for any mistakes covered in class one), rope management (the three rope management techniques needed for Grigri lead belays), belayer positioning (relative force vectors, understanding the effects of dynamic elasticity and rope drag on force transference, climber opposition), and fall adjustment (fall adjustment evaluation, quick sits/standard belay/dynamic belay, emergency sprinting belays). Following the instruction, climbers then mock lead and mock lead belay. The third class focuses first on progress assessment, and then on communication, proper fall positioning, pendulumning falls, and catching falls with both standard and dynamic belays, along with a lot of falling practice. The fourth class focuses on sport leading outdoors, including threading anchors, gate orientation, gear assessment, route reading, sport topropes, threading and rappelling off of sport anchors, backing off with a quicklink, and assessing the skills of the climbers in the course to determine whether they are ready for indoor and outdoor lead climbing. Be sure to check []Hangar18's[/url] schedule for class 1-4 dates.
