Kennilworth Gardens, NE Washington, DC

July is a beautiful time of year at Kennilworth Gardens. Lotus blossoms and waterlilies galore! Join us for a great morning.

For this Meetup, be prepared. The park is unpaved so good, sturdy shoes will be a must. Also, during this time of year, there will be lots of bugs, so bring bug-spray. In addition to the Lotus blossoms and waterlilies, Kennilworth Gardens also has marshlands that can be accessed through a boardwalk.

Some additional park information:

The visitor center and restrooms are mobility accessible, however, after a heavy rain the ground may have standing water, and the edges of the ponds may be soft. Use caution when walking.

While the pond area and trails are normally an easy walk, you may want to bring your own water in summer, or take advantage of the fountain by the visitor center during your stay. There are no vending machines in the park. If you are eating in the park, we ask that your bring your wrappers and other material home with you when you leave.

Wildlife is wild. That's what makes these animals special. Keeping at least ten feet between you and the animals will prevent injury to all.

    July 2, 2013

  • Denise

Hi All: We have received some feedback that the lotus blossoms are nearly at peak with peak expected for this coming weekend. We know that it is the holiday weekend, but we are hoping this date change will result in the best photographic results. With nature, we need to be flexible.. :)

Hope to see you all out on SATURDAY, JULY 6th!!!

I was at KAG a few days ago. The boardwalk leading to the marshlands was blocked by a massive fallen tree.

If some one has a Nikon[masked]mm or a Canon[masked]mm. It's a must to bring for this location. A tripod would be an added must. When shooting dragonflies, they don't sit still for long, but always seem to come back to the same location. So having a tripod to lock on is a must.

    June 26, 2013

  • Shaun M.

Dan: I've been several times. Tripod is essential, in my opinion. Macro lens may be of limited use because the lotuses are in large ponds (several hundred feet square) and you will be standing on the pathway; you will not be able to get close to most of the flowers, though you may be able to one or two that are growing close to the edge of the pond, near the path. 35mm will be of limited use: OK if what you want to shoot is an image of the whole field of lotuses but, if you want to fill the frame with a single bloom, it will be of no use for that. You would need at least 200mm, longer it you have it.

    June 26, 2013

  • Dan G.

Having never been here, any suggestions on gear to bring? Tripod needed or beneficial? I don't have a macro lens, but do have a kit lenses from Nikon as well as a fast fixed lens (35mm f/1.8) which would be better?
