Lonaconing Silk Mill

The Lonaconing Silk Mill was closed in 1957 and remains frozen in time.  The mill has been featured on National Geographic Channel's "Abandoned".  Until recently the mill was closed to all.  The owner has recently started allowing photographers into the mill.

We need a minimum of 10 people for this trip to be a go!  The mill is large enough that a group this size can easily shoot without getting in each others way.

The inside of the mill can be dark.  A tripod is suggested.  Also the owner of the mill will require you to sign a release.

Is there a bathroom onsite or nearby?

    March 28, 2014

    • Denise

There is a service station a few minutes away. There are no facilities on site.

Is there anywhere inside to sit down? I am having back issues and can only stand for so long.

    March 26, 2014

    • Don

Sorry to hear that your back is giving you problems. As Denise said the best spot is likely the office. Anything in the mill is likely pretty dirty.

The mill is not a huge area tho'. so walking around inside of it -really is not a big stretch. Denise is right, the only real place to sit is the office - my husband did that when I went the first time. Herb is quite pleasant and is always happy to have company.

Will there be someone in the group that would be able to suggest what lens would be best and settings to use?

    February 26, 2014

    • Denise

Yes Don will be able to assist you if you have questions. A tripod is a must. There are lots of shooting options, so wide to mid range telephoto will be good. As you can see from Deb's reply, the folks in our meetup are friendly and helpful. :)

Thanks for your responses. I think I have the right lens a[masked]mm 2.8 and 24-70mm 2.8 and the tripod as well. I will know in a couple of days if I will be participating or not.

Hi all, will anyone be driving from the DMV area? I would appreciate a carpool, happy to pitch in for gas and other expenses :)

Hi - what does the $140 cover? Do we just start shooting? how do the events work?

It's worth every penny of it too. Herb (the owner) has to meet us and open up the place. The money he gets goes toward the cost of patching his roof - a war he losing. I've been - 4 hours only scratches the surface. The place is frozen in time. Almost too many things for your eyes to feast. There are several levels to the building and it's a BIG building.

Don, there is a distinct possibility that I may have two of my photographer friends interested in attending. We're meeting this weekend to set our schedules. Can I let you know the beginning of the week whether the three of us can make it? Thanks - Deb

    January 17, 2014

    • Don

Hi Deb, We still have lots of spots available so I think you will be fine to wait until next week to decide.

I would like to go but want to know if there is anyone going interested in car pooling. Also how long is the drive from Northern VA. Does it require leaving on Friday?

    January 5, 2014

    • Denise

Ruth it takes about 2.5 hours from Leesburg. The trip does not require an overnight.

    January 1, 2014

    • Denise

Yes but you need to RSVP and pay for two, as we will have to pay the owner for the second spot as well.
