The Kawhia Traditional Maori Kai Festival (Waitangi Weekend)

  • Feb 4, 2012 · 10:30 PM

Here the plan:

  1. Drive up to Kawhia - leaving Wellington early on Friday to be able to arrive Friday night. Suggestion is 2pm at the central railway station (next to platform 9 where the buses leave) - a second lot of us might leave Wellington later on Friday. The camp ground is booked for that night and will need to be paid though.
  2. Stay on the camp ground (we've got 4 tent sides secured for http://www.kawhiacampingground.co.nz/index.html  it will be $16.50 p. person / p. night.)
  3. Visit the festival on Saturday, 4th February 2012: 'The Kāwhia Traditional Māori Kai Festival'
  4. Do something in the area on Sunday (E.g. Hot Water beach - a must do! and maybe some walking near by)
  5. Head off on Monday morning to Waitomo (Need to be there latest 8:30 for some activities starting at 9) and do whatever everyone feels like... glowworm caves, abseiling, blackwater rafting, just sit in a cafe and don't do anything else... should be something for everyone.

We might change plans to do Waitomo on Sunday to have more time heading back and stopping on the way. Guess we can decide that once we are there.

This was a REAL roadtrip! Qhat an amazing weekend! Filled with Maori traditions and food, Waitomo caves and hot water beach - and of course a lot of time on the road with stops all the way long wherever we felt like it! Great company - you've all been great travel mates. What's next?

I believe all tours see the glowworms, but I could be mistaken. Jaana has been. What do people know about the different options. I'd like to do something in the $100 range. I def don't want to miss the glow worms though. Rafting sounds exciting. I guess there is a part where you get to jump into total blackness. HELL YEAH!

I'm excited for this trip! For the glowworm caves we save 10% if we book online. "online bookings need to be made at least 48 hours prior to your arrival at the caves" I am looking at the Black Abyss Tour. Any recommendations? http://www.waitomo.com/book-online.aspx

Well got space for 2 - 3 more so Shyam, Anni and one more at a squeeze.

LOL!!! You are funny Jaana. Yes, definitely bringing the essentials. Michael said I will be sharing a tent with him, so was thinking should I bring a tent (I can borrow one). Definitely the usual camping stuff...blanket, torch, plates and food.

Well Shyam... just wondering... What if it starts raining? Or you get hungry? Or you want to change clothes? I'd suggest to bring at least some essentials - and some food / plates / blanket / torch... the usual camping gear. I'll bring some spare stuff, but bring along whatever you've got ;)

    January 30, 2012

  • Shyam P.

@Jaana - I reckon I only need to bring my sleeping bag?

On the serious note... we'll bring a spare tent, just in case. And Annie - the spare sleeping bag is yours too! What a household... we don't even have a couch but camping gear for Africa!

@ Jaana - I can't make it, I was just teasing Michael, how he offered his spot in the tent to a young lady, b'cos if I had of asked, I reckon there would have been no offer, hehe

    January 28, 2012

  • Anni

cool... one spot left. Anybody got a spot in a car and in a tent left? What I have to contribute? I can bring my ukulele and german gummibears. Or I can leave the Ukulele at home... as preferred...

Three things are at the top of my list of things to do in New Zealand: A Maori cultural experience, glowworm caves, and hot water beach. If we are doing all three of those things on this road trip, I don't see how I could possibly miss this!

;( Debbie just told me she can't come on that weekend... that leaves us again with Steve and my car I assume? We were aiming to leave Wellington not later than 2pm because it's such a long drive. So - that looks as if Michael, Beth and Shyam are OK with that? the other 2 will join us later. And if someone else joins they should either have a car or be OK to leave early too!

I'll be driving too as i won't know what time i can leave until last minute. Eugene will be coming with me so there should be some space in Debs' car.
    Shyam- yay for blackwater rafting!

Hi all! Sylvie and Debbie would both have a car (Sylvie 1 spare seat only) and both want to leave later. So how about I drive with one lot (Steve, Michael and either Shyam or Eugene?) earlier and Debbie drives the second lot later? That way even Gareth might be able to make it. Would be great if you lot could try sorting that out?!

Hey all - just checking if you'd be OK with a campside? Not many batches out there. The other option would be to try to get a small batch with lawns to pitch up tents too? Probably the most flexible version in terms of number of people too.
And Garteth - yeah - car pooling is the whole idea of this group :) We'll arrange driving closer to the day I guess. I can definately offer 2 seats.
