Having been doing a bit of walking around Wgtn recently, I'd quite like to revisit a couple of the walks from when I lived in Hamilton.
Rough itinerary would be:
Friday afternoon - drive to and stay somewhere in Hamilton.
Sat morning - drive to Te Aroha (less than 2 hours from Taupo)
- walk up Mt Te Aroha (952m - highest point in the Kaimai range - views up to Firth of Thames, down to Mt Maunganui, etc)
When I did this, it took me 4 hours to go up via the Tui track, and 2 hours to come down the Domain track - the Tui track is still closed (for about another year) for the Tui Mine remediation work, so it'd have to be up and down the Domain track - maybe 5 hours total including time at the top.
- a quick spa at the Domain hot pools.
- drive back to Hamilton
Sun - walk up Mt Pirongia from Corcoran Rd (959m - highest point in the Waikato region - views of Raglan, Aotea, Kawhia harbours, more depending on the weather)
Both times I've done this walk, it's taken about 3 hours up and another 3 hours back down.
- drive back to Wgtn via Taumarunui, Whanganui.
