Robot Build Contest at the Transistor

We are holding a robot building contest! We will have some prizes contributed by the Transistor and Robot Fanatic.

Here are the contest rules:

Each contestant will start with approximately the same set of components from which to build a robot.  Contestants must supply their own parts (except for the few items starred (*) on the list below).  The components must start out unassembled/unprogrammed at the beginning of the contest. Both teams and individuals are welcome to compete. The competition will begin at exactly 2PM and end at 6PM--that gives everyone 4 hours to throw a robot together. There will be one winner from 3 categories (TBD).  Show up at 1:30 to get your components examined.

Below are the competition components that will be allowed:

  • 1 Microcontroller of your choice
  • 4 motors of your choice
  • motor controllers as needed
  • 4 sensors of your choice
  • Any number of LEDs
  • Wires/Solder/breadboard/protoboard
  • A 1ft long metal rod (of any thickness)
  • a sheet of plastic (acrylic) -- Use of the laser cutter may be possible
  • rubber bands (*)
  • string (*)
  • popsicle sticks (*)
  • hot glue (*)
  • whatever other hardware/chemicals deemed necessary to hold parts together

As always, I'm open to suggestions for schedule changes or contest rules. Please brainstorm on contest categories and parts below.

Please register for the contest here: http://robocontest.eventbrite.com/

Note: if we are not able to get enough contestants (5) by Saturday, I will have to reschedule the event.  I want to make this fun AND competitive.  If the event is rescheduled, I'll turn this meetup into a build session.

Great idea! Can't wait! (assuming our calendar is OK that day, will need to check with Woman.)
