Visit THE FARM SANCTUARY in Watkins Glen

Hello RocCity Vegans! I have a great full-day outing planned.  On Sunday, June 22nd we will carpool along a scenic country-side route to Watkins Glen where we will hike the gorge and eat a picnic lunch.  From there we drive to THE FARM SANCTUARY (20 minutes) for a tour of this iconic vegan friendly home for rescued animals.  After the tour we will have a vegan picnic dinner at Sugar Hill Fire Tower Park (minutes away).  We will leave no later then 9am and will be back to Rochester no later than 7pm.  We will need to ride-share, so as rsvp's roll in we can decide how to handle that.  Save the date and let me know as soon as possible if you are fully committed to attend.

I know you said Bushnell's Basin for the Park and Ride lot, however because I am coming from Sodus, NY, it would be more convenient for me by about an hour of driving if I could meet two others at the Phelps/ Geneva Park and ride (it would be on the way for those coming from Bushnell basin to Watkin's anyways). I will be able to take two more people, besides my plus one and me (so four people in my car total).
Please someone comment if you need a carpool driver and would be willing to meet at the Phelps lot instead. If not I can make the extra drive to the Bushnell's Basin parking lot to pick people up.

    • Greg K.

I agree that driving to Bushnell is not necessary. I'll keep an eye out to see if anyone takes you up on your offer to ride with you from the geneva lot. It's hard to plan when I do not know where people are coming from.

How much food do I need to bring, besides the snack to share w all?

    June 16, 2014

    • Greg K.

I am bringing a light lunch and plenty of hydration fluid in a back pack.

      June 17, 2014

  • Greg K.

Regarding lunch - carry your lunch and a drink with you. I'll have a few light back packs should anyone need a convenient way to carry their lunch. We walk/hike up the gorge and eat lunch at the picnic area at the top. If anyone is concerned about the rigors of the hike you can drive to the picnic area at the top of the gorge. Also, after lunch we will walk down via the rim trail which is a gradual descent to the lower parking lot.

Are we hiking with lunch? Or are we hiking then going back to cars/park to eat?? Backpack...coolers....trying to figure out what type of foods to bring. Any other RAW VEGANS like myself?

Thank you Greg for the more extensive info. One more question...where will we meet to car pool?

    June 16, 2014

Sue, I am not sure why some members are not receiving my detailed updates about the trip. Check your email and see if you get my resend of the info as this comment section limits the size of the message.

Hi Greg. I DID get the details. I would like to go and I live in the north Winton area. I'll see if I can go with Joanie and Alicia. I'll let you know.

Hi Greg. I also need more details: do we need to pack picnic lunch, but not dinner? How long is the hike? Where will we meet to car pool? I would need to be a passenger as I have vision issues right now. I'll let you know about going after I get these details. I've never been to the sanctuary, but really want to see it. Thank you!

Sue, hopefully you also noted that we will be going to the fire tower right near Farm Sanctuary for vegan snacks. My thought is if everyone brings something to share our appetites will be satiated till we all get to our respective homes. Good question about the hike. the trail that we will hike is called the gorge trail. The amazing Gorge Trail winds 1.3 miles over and under the waterfalls along hundreds of stone steps plus through the spray of Cavern Cascade. On many occasions I have hiked this trail with people of varying fitness levels. A leisurely walk up takes no more than an hour and that is with many stops to enjoy the Gorge sites. We get to the top relax for 30 to 60 minutes eating our lunch and then hike back down. Please feel free to call me to answer any further questions. Look forward to seeing you.

In the event description it says "Saturday, June 22"
However June 22 is a Sunday. So did you mean Saturday June 21? Or Sunday June 22?

    May 15, 2014

    • Greg K.

Thanks for the heads up! I intended "Sunday, June 22nd". Hope you can attend.

Will you be able to join us on the new date?

      May 12, 2014

  • Greg K.

The date for our RocCity Vegan Meetup going to Farm Sanctuary is being re-scheduled to Sunday, June 22nd. For the four people who have already RSVPed you can certainly arrange to go together without Gayle and me, otherwise we hope the new date works for your schedule. For those of you who were planning on going May 24th please let me know that you received this notice.

I have been to the Sanctuary (I have their sticker on my car's bumper!) I could make it to the rescheduled date on June 22. The sanctuary is wonderful and the scenery is lovely! The animals too, of course...!
