"OUR DAY AT THE ZOO" SFE (Shoot For Edit)

No matter where your interest in cameras and photo editing take you, it's always more fun when  you can find a PURPOSE for the pictures.  This meetup will provide more different reasons to boot up your camera than any other that we've ever held before.

If just growing our technical camera and editing skills isn't challenging enough, then how about adding the extra dimension of recording images that tell a story - either with a series of shots - or maybe by just finding a story within a single picture (eg. see the meerkat image  below).  As always for these SFE outings, we'll review uploads to our site at our regular monthly meeting the following Wednesday night (see the separate announcement).

Compositing parts of different pictures into one image using selections and Layer masks in Photoshop isn't for everyone, but for those of us who like that kind of thing, we're also inviting uploads of composites from this shoot that include animals in interesting or humorous poses, wearing clothing, etc. etc.  Those who've worked with composites before already know that getting the right shot is often the hardest part.  That can be a learning experience in itself!

Let's see... reasons for taking pictures of animals at a zoo.  OH!!  Did I mention that the Zoo's annual calendar contest is underway?  RPEG hasn't done very well competing against our friends at Nature Photography in this contest in past years, so we're moving with a bit less... fanfare this time.  Wouldn't it be nice though, if we could come from behind with a surprise win this year?!

Bring your family:  Bring your friends.  Hopefully there will be a discount at the gate for RPEG members, and we'll have more on that later.  In the meantime, be sure to RSVP soon, rather than later, and come ready to have a good time!

Also for anyone interested, this is a much more detailed update that I received from Kim, Arnie's aunt.
Since your visit - Arnie had to have a 2nd chest tube put in because his other lung collapsed. So he has two chest tubes in draining fluid from his lungs. He is still on the ventilator and is still pretty medicated. So he is still unable to communicate. Arnie is still running a slight fever and his blood pressure is high. The hospital called us last night to get some questions answered to do an MRI. When I called the hospital this afternoon - they did not yet do the MRI and they might have it done tonight. They are considering the MRI because they have not been able to take Arnie off of the ventilator and they want to take his neck brace off. But they want to make sure that there is no damage to the tissue or ligaments in the neck. The CT Scans they have done - don't show those kinds of things, but an MRI would.
So he is not really worse, but he is not progressing

I really enjoyed exchanging tips and ideas with other members of our group. I know that my images will be even better at my next visit to a zoo.

Pamela, thanks for the offer. Maryanne called me tonight and offered a ride so you don't have to worry about picking me up. Perhaps another photo shoot at another time. I hope you are able to get your project done so you can join us.

Thanks Kathleen. I will call for sure - and if it's too late to call I will leave a message here! Someone is awake here by 6 a.m. so you CAN call that early in the a.m. on Saturday! (This is a top secret message and no other RPEG'ers may read this very secret message!)

Don't forget to send a copy of a photo from our day at the Hungerford studios. They really appreciate them. They have received a few.

Sure Arnold, we've always been able to use tripods in past years - though there may be a crowd this time for the orangutan newborn. I know I'll have mine in tow - if just on principle.

As for your question on "flash (for indoor shots)..." Sure, as far as I know flash is okay indoors there. Mine will be on (or in my left hand) pretty much all day. Watch for another "flash vs the sun" tutorial some time this summer though.. i.e. lacking a white ceiling, flash is at its best outdoors in bright sunlight.

Can we use tripods and flash (for indoor shots) at the zoo?

Will try to make it there on my own before the edit meeting. Sounds like a crowd on Saturdays ... Not the best for getting good shots, for me anyway!
