Saturday In The Sun Tutorial

If you're of the opinion that flash is strictly an alternative light source in dimly-lit rooms and should be avoided as much as possible, think again.  Whether you've got a wedding to shoot in your future or not, be sure to RSVP for this annual (outdoor flash tutorial) event at our favorite Mendon Ponds venu on Canfield Road.  Check the maps with GPS coordinates below.

A footnote on the Lightroom screen-shot above:  We'll demonstrate this powerful but simple-to-use feature known as HTP (Highlight Tone Priority) in Canon cameras, or "Active D-Lighting" in Nikons.   We'll also be demonstrating OCF (OFF-camera-flash) with a self-propelled portable umbrella stand (AKA a willing assistant), along with the standard ON-camera flash techniques in both TTL and flash-manual modes.

Be sure to check the "Flash Tutorials" and "Flash - Learning to love it" albums under the PHOTOS tab on our website if you're a new RPEG member.  If you've already mastered the use of the PSAM modes on your camera but haven't integrated a Speedlight flash into your photography, then this one meetup has the potential to add more to the quality of your photographs than any other two hours we'll spend together in the next year.  We're weather dependent for this, so if it looks at all rainy, be sure to stay tuned to your email and to our website Saturday morning for our decision on go/no-go.

I got more out of today's session than the average meeting. Steve did a great job in selecting pre-reading as well as the flow of the workshop.

Wow, there's no "one size fits all" answer to that one Mario. If you're shooting in any of the automatic settings on your camera, then there's nothing more to do at all. If you're shooting in any of the PSAM settings, all you have to do is pop up your flash and the camera will take it from there. Beyond that, you'll have to come ready to take good notes on Saturday.

Having set my camera for time lapse. What would I set my camera to for flash shooting?

This is one I wish I could attend. Sadly I won't be in town.

Mario, You sure can. In fact, these kinds of tutorials are a great place to find out beforehand whether or not you want to buy a piece of equipment. BTW, If our Speedlight demo goes well that day, you definitely will.

I don't have an external flash. Can I use the one on the camera?
