RE: [Rochester-Photo-Editors] Follow-up Adobe now renting you software

I can tell you that the proof required is substantial.  My son had to provide both transcripts and receipts from the bursar’s office at the university, plus a statement of how he used the software (editing and tagging his substantial collection of samples of “critters” from the river he studies).

I have purchased educational software before. I was always asked for proof of educational credentials when I went to activate the software.

Hi All,

I asked the audience at the last meeting how many were PhotoShop users (CS 4, 5, 6,) to understand how many would be impacted by Adobe's decision to change from selling you software with a perpetual license (owning) to having you pay a monthly fee ( a.k.a. renting).  The response surprised me, almost 50%.

An active conversation ensued, some members were not aware of this development or the implications/impacts .  There were several good suggestions for alternative software packages...

My personal concerns were:

Much more expensive (since I normally only upgrade every couple of years).

Very irritating since changes to the program and user interface will be forced on me like them or not.

(I love Element v10, not so happy with Elements v11)

So after fuming for awhile, I decided to upgrade from CS5 to CS6 before that option disappeared.    Went to Adobe.com and could not find an upgrade path for my CS5   -   I was too late.

But good news.   Went to AcademicSuperStore.com ready to buy CS6 and use one of my three kids in college to qualify for a heavily discounted, academic price for a full copy (not an upgrade), and was pleasantly surprised when no "proof of eligibility" was required,  just $344.99 plus shipping

(you have to select the product carefully, this package includes all the disks, other choices require you download the software)

Don't know how long this option will last, I suspect that once existing inventory is used up renting will be the only alternative.

Thought you would like to know.

regards

Al
