Mission Gorge after work

  • Jun 18, 2013 · 5:30 PM
  • Mission Gorge Climbing Area

Summer is here and RCSD is flourishing.  It's time to get outside and climb after work. Mission Gorge is the the place of choice for Tuesdays.

http://www.mountainproject.com/v/mission-gorge/105790250

We'll meet at the gate next to the Visitor Center at 5:30. We will head up the trail at 5:30pm.  Since we do not have a lot of daylight, I want to make the most of the time.  So, no waiting around. If you are running late, post to the Meetup event so we know you are coming, and we can give you directions to where we will be. If people can get there earlier, go for it.  There is cell coverage up there, and someone is bound to have a smart phone.  I highly recommend getting Meetup.com's smart phone app.

Anyone is welcome on the trip, but you must have at least shoes/harness/belay device and carabiner/chalk bag.  If you have gear to build anchors and/or do lead climbing; feel free to bring it.

Afterwards, we'll head over to McGregor's Grill & Ale House for some well deserved food and drinks.

Make sure you park outside the gates as they close at 1900. Bring a headlamp in case it gets dark

There was a fire at Mission Trails on Sunday. All trails are closed due to the fire. I will keep an eye on this and hopefully they will open it up tomorrow.

    • Peter M.

Yep! Yay! "Mission Trails and the Visitor Center are now open. See below for details
The major trailheads in Mission Trails are now open with the exception of everything between the SDG&E Power Lines and SR 52. The trails that are closed are signed and surround the perimeter of the burned area, which is approximately 110 acres. Please stay out of this area until further notice."

    how does the waitlist work?

    June 17, 2013

    • Peter M.

The if someone drops out of the Meetup, you will be automatically added to the RSVP list. We cap events due to complexities of managing people and/or the size of the climbing area.

      June 17, 2013

  • katy r.

Is the meeting place and address posted current?

    June 16, 2013

    • Peter M.

The address listed is the address of the Visitor's Center off of Friars Rd. There is a gate we will all be meeting at.\

For anybody new to climbing or new to the group, please see this discussion thread on climbing etiquette

http://www.meetup.com/Rock-Climbers-Of-San-Diego/messages/boards/thread/6024023/0#[masked] It will very much help you become an appreciated member in the climbing community

For anybody not able to go, please update your RSVP so we can get waitlisted folks onto the event. Thanks a bunch and see everybody on Tuesday

We are a couple of days away. Does everyone have rides out to Mission Cliffs? Looks like the weather is supposed to be in high 70s. It will be a good day to climb.

This sounds awesome, if anyone doesn't end up coming (ie a spot opens up) and someone is driving from down south I'd love to come! I'm posted in PB without transportation. I'll see you all next time if it doesn't work out!

    June 9, 2013

    • Paul P

Maya, if a spot opens and if you can get yourself somewhere closer to balboa and 805 I can pick you up on the way there. I believe there's a bus that runs along balboa/garnet.

Temps are looking very moderate to slightly chilly next week. Lunch rock might be a better choice after all. We can make the call later this week.

  • Peter M.

I talked with Paul P last night about it and we are going to hit up The Canyon for this first trip. He said we can set up around 5 top ropes for everyone to use. Bob we'll try Lunch Rock the following week. :)

    June 7, 2013

  • Bob R

Unless it's expected to be hot, I recommend Lunch Rock area for all the beginners attending.

    June 7, 2013

  • Paul P

Hmm. I'd recommend the canyon. Stays cool in the afternoon

    June 6, 2013

    • Peter M.

The canyon may work, Paul let's discuss this soon so I can update this meetup.

      June 6, 2013

    • Wing

This early in the summer, it doesn't get too hot late in the afternoon. It tends to be more of a problem in late July & August. The weather wasn't bad at yesterday's meet up

      June 6, 2013

  • Chris

I can bring rope and draws if needed!

    June 6, 2013

  • Nikki

Any idea which area you will head to?

    June 6, 2013

    • Peter M.

I hadn't decided which area just yet. But will discuss it with other Organizers and post to this meetup within a few days.

      June 6, 2013

  • Moises

    Ill bring rope and gear.
