December Red Rocks

  • Dec 7, 2012 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Winter will be setting in and this is a great time to head out to Vegas and Red Rocks for a fun filled weekend of climbing. This is the 3rd annual December Red Rocks Trip. Last year, 22 people from Get Your Climb On from Nor Cal went to Red Rocks and had an epic adventure. This year (since I, the organizer, lives in San Diego) will be joing 2 Meetup groups:Rock Climbers of San Diego (So Cal) and Get Your Climb (Nor Cal). This meetup will be reminiscient of the old days of the RCS when there was a chapter in Northern and Southern California. The RCS used to meet in Yosemite. It's winter time and a great time of the year to go to Red Rocks.

The trip should entail everyone coming in on Friday and head back either Sunday evening or Monday morning. Personally since I live in San Diego and it is a 5-6 hour drive, I will be driving up Friday morning and driving back Monday morning. Since Las Vegas is a short flight for both San Diego and the Bay Area; I would recommend flying in Friday after work and Monday before work. This will maximize the time of climbing. BUT it is up to you when you want to fly in. We will be climbing Calico Basin on Saturday and the First and Second pullouts within the park on Sunday.

I recommend everyone booking a room at the Red Rocks Casino. This is the closests accomodation (besides camping) to Red Rocks. It is a very nice hotel and close to a lot of the local restuarants. Feel free to split rooms with people to reduce the cost. Also, car pooling can save money, but not necessarily time.

This trip is organized so anyone can come out climbing. Anyone from a newbie to an experience Trad climber can come out and enjoy this trip. The agenda for Saturday/Sunday will be get up, go climb all day, come back and meetup for dinner and socialize.

This is going to be a great event joing 2 Meetup Groups. Come out and enjoy a great weekend of climbing.

.....Oh Yeah, and it's my birthday on December 10. ;)

Great Trip! Had a blast with everyone.

Really enjoyed the trip and both groups. North and South. Met some great people who I added to my list of climbing friends. Thanks Peter for a great job organizing the event and for providing the nopportunity to get back to RR.

Who has experience doing multi pitch and wants to partner up? I'm doing 5.6/5.7.

    December 5, 2012

    • Tori K.

Shoot - keep doing that...Anyhow, unfortunately, I am not an experience multi-pitch climber, but I really want to get into it. I can definitely climb 5.6/5.7 & would love to help the group clean & get some multi-pitch mileage, if you have time/space to have me. Also, I am traditionally a sport climber, not trad. So, I can't lead (but happy to clean :), unless we are doing sport climbs. In which case, I'm happy to. Let me know. Thanks!

Hi Ed & Tori -- Unfortunately I had to back out of this trip (work), but I lead trad (although only about a 5.7, 5.8 level), and am experienced at multi pitch. When you return, if you would ever like to multi pitch, etc., please let me know. I had a full trad rack and ropes also... just always looking for more people to enjoy trad. Have a FANTASTIC trip!

Joshua Soros from the Northern California Group is boarding his flight now! He wants to know,
"Is anyone climbing tomorrow morning? If so, call me at[masked]-0007. I have a rope and some draws."

i am driving up and back from yuma az and i'm happy to share a room with anyone. i'm presuming no one is heading up there from my direction, although i'd love company for the drive.

    December 5, 2012

    • Kim

Sonia you're welcome to share a room with Erica and I, I don't mind sleeping on the floor, just wanna save more money :)

      December 5, 2012

    • sonia m.

super! i will be arriving pretty late so i will call you from the road. and i'm sure the queen sized beds won't force anyone onto the floor!!

  • Iohan

Hey guys! Two of us leaving from San Diego hoping to catch a ride with somebody intending to return on Sunday evening.
We'll happily pay for the entire gas bill of the one driving us if we can arrange that way. Accomodation is not set yet.

    Thanks!

Hi Ed, I'm trying to make it up there Thursday but haven't worked out where to stay yet. Are you camping or getting a room?

      December 5, 2012

    • Ed

Staying at Suncoast. Did you see the spreadsheet? It has all of the info on it. If you want to go and are going to stay there I will squeeze you in. Let me know asap.

      December 5, 2012

  • Peter M.

Few more days and we will be climbing. We have 13 people signed up on the spreadsheet and 31 people signed up here. Please, respond to the email I sent out earlier or take your name off the list if you can't go. There are people looking to car pool as well as share the cost of the room. If you want to cut the cost of your hotel, split a room at the Suncoast. It can turn out to be cheaper than camping.

    December 3, 2012

    • Kim

peter, me and erica will carpool with you if that's still alright, and we're gonna share a room at suncoast

      December 3, 2012

    • Kim

Please let me know soon, thanks

      December 5, 2012

  • Mark W.

I'm thinking of going up Thursday staying until Sunday night or Monday morning. Weighing my options of camping or getting a room, anyone interested in sharing a room?

    December 4, 2012

  • Tori K.

    ROOM SHARE??

Hey gang - I will be arriving Friday night. Im flying for work, so tough to pack all the camp gear, climb, etc...

Anyone want to share a room? I am looking for Fri, Sat & Sun. Could do Fri & Sat only, too. Whatever works best. FYI - I have no reservation made now, so could join yours or we can book something next week. Let me know. Thanks!
PS - Will be in JTree for the weekend, so won't reply till late Sun. Thx!

    November 30, 2012

    • Kim

i'd be willing to share a room if the cost is low! thanks, kim

      December 3, 2012

    • Kim

update, me and erica are sharing a room at suncoast, you're welcome to join!

      December 3, 2012

  • Kit

Hi all -- I'm leaving Friday morning and coming back Monday afternoon from San Diego -- I can take additional passengers (up to 2, depending on gear). Also, I am currently camping, but would like to share a hotel room -- any possibilities out there? (I'm female)

    October 29, 2012

    • Erica C.

Would love to carpool and share a room and gas $$. I don't have any res. Should I look into it?

      December 2, 2012

    • Kim

hey girls, i'd like to carpool too, but i don't want to drive my 'ol gas guzzling van. (and looks like tori is flying) let me know if there's any room in your car for me. also, let me know if there's any room in your room as I'm looking to save more, thanks kim

      December 3, 2012

  • Kim

I wonder if there is any interest in setting a Saturday morning meet up time and place for those members who are looking for a beginner's, group climbing situation. I suggest 1st turnout, 9:00am. also needed, a volunteer, someone familiar with the area, to supervise this group. how about a way for late arrivals to find that group.

    November 30, 2012

    • Peter M.

I would not suggest the first turnout to meet up because you have to pay $15 dollars to get in. Calico Basin is free and has a spot for everyone to meet. We have 2 Meetup Groups coming on this trip. And the way I run the Red Rocks trip is to have everyone meet up on Sat morning, and then head out. This way people get to meet each other and find partners or a group to go with. I will work on dividing people up into separate groups that morning. Those that want to do Multi-Pitch and those that will do sport (beginners will do sport/top rope). The Multi-Pitch people will take off from there and go have fun. Depending on how many Sport/Top Rope people there are, we may or may not, have separate groups. If there is only 1 group; then we will hit Calico Basin Sat and then head into the Park on Sunday. If there are 2 groups, 1 group will be in Calico Basin while the other group will head into the park.

      November 30, 2012

    • Peter M.

Then on Sun, these groups will switch. Sun for anyone doing Multi-Pitch will most likely be decided on Sat evening when everyone meets up for dinner. I will be sending out information next week detailing a little more. As for late comers, they will have to either search around in Calico Basin, 1st/2nd/3rd pull outs, or hopefully they have partners to do multi-pitch with. Snooze ya loose.

Camping can be tricky on weekends during hi-season. The only campground fills up early.Carpoolers should be climbing compatable with riders.(eg; trad,multi-pitch, early start, vs casual, late start, sport top-roping) Unless you plan on meeting up with a group at a central location like 1st or 2nd turnout, you should expect to climb with the one you're with.

    November 30, 2012

    • Peter M.

Camping during Dec is not busy. Or at least it hasn't the last 2 years. Sat morning we will be meeting up around 7-7:30 to make sure everyone has someone to climb with.

I'm driving my truck. Seats up to 5-6. Covered bed that can carry plenty of gear. Plan on leaving Thursday afternoon and coming back either Sunday night or Monday morning. Flexible on the departure. Can camp or stay at the hotel.

hey Mark, when are you planning to leave and when do you want to leave from there?

      November 27, 2012

    • Mark H

I was thinking about leaving Thursday afternoon and returning sunday late afternoon, but am flexible, does that work for you?

      November 28, 2012

  • Peter M.

I just sent out an email to everyone in the group. Please take a look at it. Also, if you are looking for a cheap place to stay; the Suncoast has rooms for $44/night. It's a decent hotel, nothing fancy; and fairly close to Red Rocks.

I would like to head up early, like Wednesday or Thursday, stay at the campground, climb multi-pitch trad up to 5.9+ and return Sun. Nite or Mon.
If anyone wants to ride/climb with me, fell free to contact me. I have room in my truck three passengers and much gear/firewood.

    November 1, 2012

    • gordon b.

kit, I can carry much firewood. I will also bring firewood. it's not camping without fire. I have not yet decided whether to camp or hotel.if I decide to hotel, I can then take my truck without the camper, then I can drive the rough road to black velvet Canyon.

      November 6, 2012

    • Kit

Gordon, that sounds excellent!! I will be camping, not sure where (have never been there yet). My plans have changed a little, and I will probably be there as early as Weds. midday.

I don't really have much by way of gear but I do hope to get my hands on a few things before the trip. Anything will help. Thanks!

I am working with the Red Rocks Casino (https://redrock.sclv.com/) to see about getting us a group rate. They have a 10 room minimum. Between the 2 groups we should be able to fill that. I will post later.
