Weekly Hike in Pawtuckaway State Park

Weekly meet-up to explore the hiking trails of Pawtuckaway State Park. Each week we'll try to get a little further/see a little bit more until we've managed to hike every single trail (or as close as we can come until the snow stops us).

We'll be aiming for easy/moderate hikes - no iron rung ladders, no scaling rocks/cliff faces, etc. - of about 2-3 miles to start. Expected duration of hikes is 2-4 hours (my knees aren't the greatest and I'm not an experienced hiker, so we'll be going slow and probably stopping to catch our breath frequently). The terrain may range from flat, dirt roads of relatively even keel to rough, uphill terrain with rocks, exposed roots, mud, puddles, and rocks that require scrambling over (and up). We'll never know what we'll encounter until we hit it, so attendees should have good mobility and a sense of humor and adventure but do not have to be super fit - we'll go at a slow/moderate pace, with lots of stopping to rest :-)

Attendees should wear appropriate shoes (hiking boots or sneakers) and should bring plenty of water (2 bottles at least), snacks, bug spray, a first aid kit, and a Pawtuckaway State Park Trail Map (found here: http://www.nhstateparks.org/uploads/pdf/Pawtuckaway-Trail-Map.pdf). You may also want to bring hiking/walking poles, a camera, and/or binoculars. The goal of these hikes is to get outside, enjoy nature, see some beautiful scenery, and to relax/have fun (while challenging ourselves physically). If we see something interesting, we may linger.

I'm open to suggestions on where to meet up: I prefer to meet somewhere on the west side of the park (off Reservation Road), as it's less busy/crowded, but it's also more isolated/easier to get lost/harder to find each other. I'm open to suggestions! Once we pick our meet up location, then we'll know what trail/route we'll start out with.

    Hi,
my apologies to everyone in case you waited for me this am, I took a wrong turn which took me about 20 mins out of the way and then once I got on the dirt road part of Reservation Road by car is very low to the ground and was bottoming out so I had to turn back. I will bring my truck next time now that I know how deep some of the potholes are.

I took that road, too. That is not the correct dirt road I learned from a local. You need to stay right on the paved road just a few feet further than the left dirt road turnoff, then the paved road also becomes dirt. You continue on past a couple of parking areas until you get to the spot where we met up. Next time!

Soooo...it looks like everyone is okay with meeting off of Reservation Road? I will post revised instructions for how to get there and where to meet then. I'm thinking we start with the firetower hike for Sunday (1 mile round trip) and once we get to the firetower if we're all spry and full of get up and go, instead of going back down the way we came up we could do a south ridge trail to mountain trail loop (2-3 miles?).

I know the main entrance & Round Pond Road by the Boulder Field but I am not sure about the Reservation Road is this off a dirt road? Off Rte. 107/27? If so, I have yet to find & start at this point.

Yes, it is off Rte 107. From Rte 101 (Exit 5), go north to the T intersection at the Irving Statin just past Hannaford's. Turn left onto Rte 107. Reservation Road is on the right about 7 miles up Rte 107. If you come to Rte 43, you have gone to far. Turn around and go back on Rte 107. Reservation Road will now be .6 miles from Rte 43, and should be the first left.

Do you plan on setting hikes up any other days or just Sundays for now?

    August 18, 2013

    • Terri B.

At this time, Sunday is the only day I have free. But if there are other days you want to go, definitely post on the message board and see if you can get something started!
